Liberty girls basketball team finishes second in tournament

NEW — 1 p.m. Feb. 11, 2011

The Liberty High School girls basketball team fell behind early and could never overcome the deficit Thursday as the Patriots fell to Mount Si 39-32 in the title game of the 3A KingCo Tournament at Bellevue College.

Danni Sjolander topped Liberty with 15 points. Mount Si’s Jori Braun scored a game-high 18 points.

Both teams advance to the 3A Sea-King District Tournament that starts Saturday. Liberty hosts Bishop Blanchet at 7 p.m. in a first-round game. Mount Si, by winning the tournament, earned a first-round bye. The Wildcats play Nathan Hale or Seattle Prep at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at Bellevue College.

Juanita took third in the KingCo tournament by beating Mercer Island 69-60. Juanita entertains Franklin at 1 p.m. Saturday in the district tournament while Mercer Island plays at noon at Bainbridge.

Skyline High School grad reaches 600

Maddie Maloney, a former Skyline High School standout, scored 10 points Thursday to help the Seattle Pacific University women’s basketball team defeat Northwest Nazarene 65-62 in a Northwest Athletic Conference game at Brougham Pavilion.

Maloney scored six of the last eight points for the Falcons. She now has 600 career points.
