Raise the Dough for Seattle Children’s

Diners looking for a savory or sweet treat can get both and help sick children at the Hope on the Hill guild’s second annual fundraiser in the Issaquah Highlands on March 22.

Mark Mullet’s two franchises — Zeeks Pizza and Ben & Jerry’s — will donate 20 percent of the day’s sales, including take out and delivery, to uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s.

Last year, before Mullet opened Ben & Jerry’s, the fundraiser raised $1,200 for the hospital at Zeeks. This year, the guild has a goal of raising at least $1,500, Hope on the Hill event chair Amy Trenary said.

In 2010, the hospital provided more than $100 million in uncompensated care to families in need.

“We want all kids to be able to have access to the best health care possible, regardless of their family’s ability to pay,” Trenary said.

The guild started in 2009 and has collected money and toys for Seattle Children’s through a variety of ways, including the Tea for Hope auction.

When Mullet learned about the guild’s idea for Raise the Dough, he jumped on board. After all, Seattle Children’s saved his life, he said.

In 1974, when Mullet was 18 months old, he saw his mother was boiling something on the stove. Thinking she was making a home version of Play-Doh, he climbed on the stove to get a fistful.

His mother was actually boiling water for tea. When Mullet reached for the pot, he spilled boiling water on himself, getting third-degree burns on his stomach. He spent three months recovering at what was then Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Since then, two of Mullet’s four daughters have received care from Seattle Children’s after playground and playtime accidents.

The guild is offering another incentive for participating in the fundraiser. Patrons older than 18 ordering from Zeeks Pizza or Ben & Jerry’s the day of the fundraiser can enter a drawing for two tickets to Issaquah’s Village Theatre.

Later, a local musician will play from 8-9:30 p.m. at Zeeks Pizza.

Donations can also be sent to Hope on the Hill Guild, c/o Candice Boyd, 25046 S.E. 43rd Way, Issaquah, WA 98029, or made online at www.hopeonthehillguild.org.
