Math athletes can exercise their minds and win prizes at the TriMathlon, held nationwide and at the Issaquah Mathnasium on May 14.
Registration for the math day begins on Pi Day, March 14.
Students in third through sixth grades can register for free either online or at the Issaquah Mathnasium.
On the day of the contest, up to 30 students from each grade level will have a half-hour to complete three fun, but challenging math games: a counting game tests students’ abilities to count from any number, to any number, by any number; magic squares awards students points for creativity in developing their own math problems; and mental math workout evaluates students’ number acumen by asking them to solve problems mentally.
Questions become progressively more difficult for students in higher grade levels.
“Math is really fun,” Issaquah Mathnasium Center Director Sumitha Reddy said. “We want kids to know how many ways you can enjoy math.”
Each grade level will have a first-, second- and third-place winner receiving prizes of $100, $75 and $50, respectively, to Amazon.com. As an added bonus, students who place can win free tutoring sessions at the Issaquah Mathnasium, with first place getting eight classes, second place receiving six classes and third place collecting four classes.
Top-scoring students have the opportunity to qualify for nationals. The 12 national winners will receive honors and more than $10,000 in cash prizes.
Every child who participates will receive a certificate of achievement and a free goody bag and T-shirt. Businesses that would like to donate prizes to the TriMathlon can call Reddy at 270-1054 or e-mail her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“Mathnasium’s National TriMathlon Day is an ideal opportunity for us to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of math students in these grade levels,” Reddy said. “Each challenge tests a different facet of students’ analytical and computational abilities.”
