Issaquah High School netters nab opening win

NEW — 11:45 a.m. March 18, 2011

The Issaquah High School girls tennis team opened its season Thursday with a 7-0 victory against host Liberty.

Dayna Bennett, of Issaquah, won the No. 1 singles match with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Emmie Kellog-Smith. Issaquah’s Sam Garrard and Sabrina Norton captured the No. 1 doubles match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Julie Do and Audry LaFraugh.

In other action, Skyline lost to Mercer Island 6-1. No. 4 singles player Kianna Bertonlino accounted for Skyline’s win by defeating Kajal Tiwany 7-6, 7-5.

Issaquah baseball gets blanked

The Issaquah High School baseball team dropped its season-opener 8-0 to visiting Kentridge on Thursday in a nonleague contest. The Eagles were held to four hits by Kentridge pitchers. Sheldon Stuber hit a home run for Kentridge, which scored five times in the second inning.

In other action, Skyline lost to visiting Mount Rainier 3-1.

Skyline softball falls to Bonney Lake

The Skyline High School girls softball team fell to visiting Bonney Lake 14-2 Thursday in a nonleague contest. Anna Kamber had two hits for Skyline and Lindsey Nicholson drove in both of the Spartans’ runs.

Spartans open track season

Three athletes won two individual events for the Skyline High School track and field team Thursday as the Spartans opened their season at home with a jamboree. Skyline hosted Seattle Prep, Bellevue Christian and Redmond.

Skyline’s Michelle Bretl and Haley Ziegler each won two events for the girls team. Bretl captured the 200-meter run in 27 seconds and took the 400 in 1:01. Ziegler won the discus with a throw of 82 feet and was first in the javelin with a throw of 109-10.

Andrew Matthews won two events for the boys team. Matthews captured the 100 in 11.0 and took the 400 in 49.80. Skyline’s Kasen Williams, one of the premier high jumpers in the state, finished first in the event at 6-9.
