Skyline High School baseball wallops Eastlake

The Skyline High School baseball team pounded out 11 hits Monday as the Spartans whipped Sammamish Plateau rival Eastlake 9-1 in a 4A KingCo Conference contest at Skyline.

Jimmy Sinatro led the Spartans with three hits. Clayton Huber had two hits, both doubles, and knocked in three runs. Travis Snider also had two hits and three RBIs. In addition, Snider pitched three innings of relief and struck out four batters. Connor Gilchrist, who started on the mound for Skyline, picked up the victory.

Skyline went to 1-1 in league play and 3-4 for the season. Eastlake dropped to 0-3 in league play and 2-3 for the season.

California reading

A woman said her credit card information had been used to make fraudulent purchases at a bookstore in Redlands, Calif., March 12. The estimated loss is unknown.

Buzzkill

Men in hoods and masks damaged the building and stole security cameras from Gourmet Latte, 14327 Issaquah-Hobart Road S.E., at 11:30 p.m. March 14. The estimated loss is $1,500.

Backyard bash

Police visited a vacant residence in the 4000 block of 212th Way Southeast the afternoon of March 14. Officers and a real estate agent had recently discovered the home being used by teenagers a party location. The agent found the shed unlocked on the most recent occasion, but nothing had been stolen.

Hoedown

Jewelry, a DVD player and a flat-screen TV were stolen from a residence in the 15600 block of Issaquah-Hobart Road Southeast prior to 2 p.m. March 16. The burglar used a hoe in the yard to smash a window and gain entry. The estimated loss is $2,550.

Driving under the influence

Police arrested a 33-year-old Bothell man, Derek Bowman, for driving under the influence and a hit-and-run accident, in the 19000 block of Southeast 44th Way at 8:08 p.m. March 16.

King County Council honors 13,000 county employees

King County Council members recognized 13,000 county employees and declared Monday as Public Employee Appreciation Day.

“The motion and proclamation we did today shows our appreciation for the work public employees carry out every day of the year and a recognition of the sacrifices our employees make to ensure services continue to be delivered in this economic crisis,” council Chairman Larry Gossett said in a statement.

The nine-member council adopted the measure in a unanimous decision.

The recognition acknowledges the essential public services provided by public employees, including police and firefighters, doctors and nurses, teachers and social workers.

AAA offers driving school at Timber Ridge

Motorists can register for the AAA Driver Improvement Program for a refresher course on defensive driving skills.

The class, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 2 at Timber Ridge at Talus, 100 Timber Ridge Way, N.W. offers practical guidance for traffic accident prevention, as well enhancing driver safety and confidence.

Drivers age 55 or older who successfully complete the class will qualify for automobile insurance premium discounts.

Rogue Ales conquers international design competition

Issaquah Brewhouse parent company Rogue Ales poured on the packaging awards at a recent design competition.

Rogue’s bottles and tap handles scored higher than entrants from beverage giants to nab top packaging honoring. The bottle for Issaquah-brewed White Frog Ale took first place in the special packaging category in the San Francisco POP Awards.

The competition honor best in point-of-purchase displays.

Rogue’s honorees in the category included Morimoto Soba Ale, Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout, Double Chocolate Stout and Dead Guy Ale.

Remember: In earthquakes, drop, cover and hold is best bet

King County emergency planners set out to correct misinformation spreading on the Web about the best method to take cover in earthquakes.

The county Office of Emergency Management recommends the drop, cover and hold method as the safest bet.

“Unfortunately, emails have circulated recently, touting the ‘triangle of life’ technique, which incorrectly claims that people can use ‘voids’ or ‘empty spaces’ as a way to survive earthquakes,” Emergency Management Director Hillman Mitchell said in a release. “Simply put, the technique is not applicable for earthquake experiences in the United States.”

Information about the “triangle of life” started to circulation in email messages and on the Web in the aftermath of the Japan earthquake.

State extends studded tire deadline to April 7

Motorists can keep studded tires on vehicles until April 7, because the state Department of Transportation has extended the deadline to remove the winter-weather gear.

The agency extended the studded tire deadline because forecasts call for possible winter driving conditions across the mountain passes and higher-elevation areas. However, if motorists fail to meet the April deadline, they could be cited by law enforcement officers.

“While we’ve extended the deadline, we’re asking drivers who live in lower elevations to remove their studded tires before April 7,” Chris Christopher, DOT director of maintenance operations, said in a release.

State law allows motorists use studded tires from Nov. 1 until March 31, unless the state changes the deadline.

Issaquah baseball team edges Eastlake

The Issaquah High School baseball team earned its first victory of the season Thursday when the Eagles edged visiting Eastlake 3-2 in a 4A KingCo Conferencee contest.

Issaquah pitcher Andrew Kemmerer held Eastlake to three hits over 6.1 innings and struck out four to earn his first varsity win. Cole Westover, who relieved Kemmerer in the seventh inning, earned his first varsity save.

Kemmerer also drove in a run as Issaquah snapped a four-game losing streak.

In other action, Redmond topped Skyline 5-3. Nate Litka had two hits and drove in two runs for Skyline.

Cody Baker, football standout, to appear on national TV

The nationally-syndicated “Sports Stars of Tomorrow”  will feature Issaquah area youth football standout defensive end Cody Baker at 4 p.m. Saturday on KIRO-TV in its program about the Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl from January at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Baker’s fumble return for a touchdown will be part of the featured segment on the eighth-grade, unlimited weight limit game.

“Sports Stars of Tomorrow” is hosted by legendary broadcaster Pat Summerall and features the brightest young stars in sports and is the only high-school sports program in national syndication. Started in 2005, “Sports Stars of Tomorrow” airs in over 90 percent of home in the United States and has featured such future stars as LeBron James, Sam Bradford and John Wall, as well as U.S. Army All-Americans Chris Wells, Tim Tebow and Matt Barkley.

“Sports Stars of Tomorrow” will portray the exciting All-American Bowl week experience of the Eastbay Youth Bowl and Combine athletes. It shows viewers the Eastbay Youth Bowl experience through the athletes from eighth-grade, unlimited weight-limit game.
