I hope to bring my experiences to journalism

Writing has always been a passion of mine, and the fact that it serves as almost a hobby for me was the biggest factor that motivated me to apply for The Beat.
There’s something about being able to use words to translate your thoughts onto paper, or in this case, the Internet. There’s writing for pleasure, and also writing to inform, which I think is absolutely essential to our world. This year, I’m excited to be on The Beat staff to do both!
My history in regards to journalism began in eighth grade, when I wrote for the Beaver Lake Middle School student newspaper. I found that a certain euphoria enveloped me when I saw my article on the front page, and I knew from that point on that journalism would be something important in my life.
Last summer, I interned for Northwest Asian Weekly at its Seattle offices, and had the opportunity to be published in that paper, a true honor for me because I was their youngest intern. It was very interesting to see how a real newspaper functioned, and I hope to bring my experiences to The Beat this year.
Writing-wise, and also in my life, my interests are very broad. I love browsing the news online, especially articles concerning what’s going on in our world. I’m subscribed to Time, Vogue, Teen Vogue, Spin, Seattle and National Geographic magazines; my subscriptions pretty much sum me up.
I absolutely love fashion — I think of it as a true form of art, and I have a Tumblr just to blog designs/fashion photography that inspires me. I’m also very interested in current world happenings, whether it is the War on Terror or American politics/issues.
I love languages — I’m trilingual, and can speak Chinese, Spanish and of course English! Music has also always been a big part of my life — I’ve played the piano since preschool and my iTunes is constantly running on my computer, no matter what I’m doing or what time it is.
All in all, I hope that I can contribute something unique to The Beat this year. I love to write, and it’s my greatest hope that I can use this love to bring enjoyment/enlightenment to any Issaquah Press reader!
