Three students in Issaquah School District boundaries — Jeff Crocker, Amy Spens and Tyler Herrmann — have won National Merit Scholarships, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced Monday.

All students graduated with the class of 2011. They are among 1,700 graduates who received scholarships.

Crocker, an Issaquah High School graduate, will attend the University of Idaho in the fall, where he plans to study physics.

Spens, a graduate of Hillside Student Community High School in Bellevue, will attend Bowdoin College in Maine, where she plans to study anthropology or archeology.

Herrmann, a Sammamish student who graduated as a valedictorian from Issaquah High School, has enrolled in New York University, where he plans to study music production.

Each of their colleges paid for the scholarships.

The corporation has already announced 2,900 other college-sponsored award recipients. Winners receive between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of college.

Other awards the corporation awards includes National Merit $2,500 Scholarship awards, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards and the of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.

In all, less than 1 percent of students who took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test qualified for National Merit Scholarship awards.

Of the 1.5 million high school juniors who took the 2009 PSAT, only 16,000 became semifinalists in the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

To compete for a scholarship, semifinalists submitted an application that included their academic records and an endorsement from a school official. Semifinalists also had to earn top SAT scores and write an essay about their extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions.

About 15,000 students made it to the finalist round and about 8,300 of them received Merit Scholarship awards.

The corporation worked with 198 higher-education institutions to offer students scholarships. In total, the 8,300 students received nearly $35 million in college scholarships.
