Liberty High School girls soccer team wins showdown

Cassidy Nangle had a goal and an assist Tuesday as she led the Liberty High School girls soccer team to a 3-1 victory against host Interlake in a battle for first place in the KingCo Conference 3A/2A.
The teams entered the game tied for first place. Liberty went to 7-0 in league play while Interlake dropped into second place at 6-1. The Patriots handed Interlake its first loss of the season. The Saints had won eight straight games entering the contest with Liberty. The Patriots meanwhile won their eighth straight game to go to 8-1 on the season. Liberty’s only loss this season was to Skyline 1-0 in a Sept. 6 nonleague season opener.
Liberty struck early against Interlake when Nangle, assisted by Kailiana Johnson, scored at the 13th minute. Kiana Hafferty, assisted by Nangle, boosted Liberty’s lead to 2-0 seven minutes later. Kali Youngdahl, assisted by Johnson, wrapped up first-half scoring with a goal at the 33rd minute.
The three goals were the most given up by Interlake this season. The Saints had outscored opponents 33-5 entering the game, and only twice had given up two goals in a game.
Liberty, however, entered with the league’s toughest defense. The Patriots had allowed just three goals all season prior to the game.
Liberty and Interlake meet again Oct. 27 at Liberty.
On Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Liberty entertains Mount Si in a league contest. Mount Si defeated Mercer Island 2-1 Oct. 4. In other league games, it was Bellevue 4, Sammamish 0; and Lake Washington 2, Juanita 0.
Issaquah soccer whips Newport
Jocelyn Eng had two goals, and Audrey Thomas a goal and two assists Tuesday as they sparked the Issaquah High School girls team to a 5-1 victory against visiting Newport in Gary Moore Stadium.
With the victory, Issaquah stayed in first place in the KingCo Conference 4A with a 4-0-1 record, a point ahead of rival Skyline.
Deanna Dekar had a goal and an assist for Issaquah. Casey Kovarek also scored for the Eagles, who are idle Thursday.
Skyline defeated Ballard 2-0. Jackie Wilson and Sydne Tingey scored Skyline’s goals. Goalkeeper Tina Vargas recorded the shutout. Skyline went to 4-0-0 in league play and 8-0-1 on the season.
In other action, it was Bothell 1, Roosevelt 0; Eastlake 0, Inglemoor 0; and Garfield 2, Redmond 0.
Skyline netters rip Bothell
The Skyline High School boys tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory against Bothell on Tuesday in a KingCo Conference 4A match.
Aman Manji, of Skyline, won the No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Jake Arlin. Brayden Hansen and Alex Wu teamed to take the No. 1 doubles with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory against Bothell’s Alan Patashnik and Jordan Huffaker.
