The Liberty High School girls soccer team clinched a Class 3A state tournament berth for the second straight year Tuesday when the Patriots defeated visiting Lake Washington 3-0 in a KingCo Conference 3A/2A contest.
Liberty improved its league-leading record to 11-0 and captured the KingCo 3A Conference’s automatic Class 3A state playoff berth. As KingCo No. 1 the Patriots do not have to play in the league tournament for a state tournament berth.
The Patriots will enter the state tournament next month seeded as the District 2 No. 1 entry and will host a first-round game.
The Patriots, who have three games left to play in the regular season, stretched their lead to 11 points over Lake Washington, which entered the game tied with Interlake for second place.
Because Interlake is a Class 2A school, the Kangaroos, 7-3-1, were the only KingCo 3A team left that had a chance to challenge Liberty for the automatic berth. Lake Washington can still reach the state tournament but will have to go through the KingCo 3A tournament.
Kailiana Johnson scored two first-half goals to lead the Patriots past Lake Washington. Johnson’s first goal, which was assisted by Kali Youngdahl, came just eight minutes into the game. Three minutes later Johnson, assisted by Kiana Hafferty, scored again.
Shannon Daly, assisted by Kimi Fry, scored Liberty’s final goal at the 65th minute.
The shutout was the seventh of the season for Liberty goalkeeper Macaire Ament.
Liberty has outscored opponents 20-1 in its last four games.
The Patriots, who have an eight-point lead over second-place Interlake, can wrap up the league title Oct. 20 at Juanita.
In other action, it was Mount Si 1, Juanita 1; Bellevue 3, Mercer Island 1; and Interlake 4, Sammamish 0.
In KingCo 4A action, Skyline moved into first place with a 4-0 victory against Issaquah.
