King County Council joins effort to land next-generation Boeing 737

October 25, 2011

NEW — 8 a.m. Oct. 25, 2011

In a push to promote King County as the top place to assemble next-generation Boeing 737 jets, County Council members agreed Monday to fund studies to support local and statewide efforts to land the program.

The aerospace company is researching possible locations to assemble the next-generation 737 — a re-engineered aircraft called the 737 MAX. The existing 737 model is assembled in Renton.

County Council members agreed to spend $130,000 on a King County study and to provide funds for a study conducted for the statewide retention effort, Project Pegasus. State officials expect to present a study next month identifying Washington’s ability to meet likely requirements as a 737 MAX assembly site.

Seeking local ties to devastating Turkey earthquake

October 25, 2011

NEW — 11 a.m. Oct. 25, 2011

Rescuers continue to search for people trapped amid rubble after a strong earthquake rattled Turkey on Oct. 23.

The magnitude-7.2 earthquake is the most powerful to hit Turkey in more than a decade and, so far, has claimed almost 300 lives. The temblor struck a remote region near the Iranian border.

The Issaquah Press seeks Issaquah School District residents connected to the earthquake or involved in relief efforts.

Email your contact information to reporter Warren Kagarise at wkagarise@isspress.com, or contact the paper on Twitter or Facebook by noon Friday.

Turkey received aid offers from dozens of nations around the globe, but so far has not accepted international aid.

Turkish Red Crescent is among the largest disaster response organizations in Europe. The organization is prepared to respond to large earthquakes. Officials at the American Red Cross and local international relief organizations, including Medical Teams International, continue to monitor the situation, in case Turkey requests assistance.

Gov. Chris Gregoire invites trick-or-treaters to executive mansion

October 23, 2011

NEW — 6 a.m. Oct. 23, 2011

Gov. Chris Gregoire — a.k.a. Elmo — is inviting trick-or-treaters to trek to the Governor’s Mansion for Halloween treats.

The governor and first gentleman Mike Gregoire plan to hand out candy from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31.

Chris Gregoire plans to dress as Elmo; Mike Gregoire intends to don a Super Grover costume. Guests can also meet other “Sesame Street” characters — Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Count Von Count, and Bert and Ernie — on the mansion’s front porch as the Gregoires greet trick-or-treaters and hand out chocolate bars.

In addition to the Halloween candy, some trick-or-treaters might receive a bonus treat, because five chocolate bars contain Elmo’s Golden Ticket — a ticket for a child and five guests to attend a holiday reception at the mansion Dec. 2. (Surplus campaign funds pay for the Halloween candy and decorations.)

Since 2005, the Gregoires have dressed up for Halloween and invited trick-or-treaters to the mansion. In the past, the first couple dressed up as characters from “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” “Charlotte’s Web” and, last year, as Morticia and Gomez from “The Addams Family.”
