Skyline volleyball team earns KingCo No. 3 berth

The Skyline High School volleyball team kept its hopes of earning a state tournament berth alive Thursday when the Spartans won two matches at the KingCo Conference 4A Tournament at Bothell. The two victories enabled Skyline, 15-4 overall, to win the KingCo No. 3 berth.
By winning the league’s No. 3 berth, Skyline meets the Western Conference No. 3 team Saturday in a match to determine a berth into next week’s Class 4A state tournament at St. Martin’s College.
Skyline twice fought back to win its matches after dropping the first set. In Skyline’s first match of the day, the Spartans stunned 10th-ranked Roosevelt 3-1.
Roosevelt won the first set 25-13 but Skyline rallied to win 25-23, 25-23, 25-20. Skyline had strong efforts from several players in the match. Maddie Magee had a team-high 29 kills. Madison Stoa covered the entire court with three blocks, 41 assists and 13 digs. Halle Erdahl contributed 10 digs and three aces, and Emily Owen had 11 digs and three aces. Katy Mounsey added six kills and three blocks.
In Skyline’s second match, the Spartans spotted Garfield the first set 25-17 but fought back to win 25-17, 25-16, 25-21. Magee paced the Spartans with 20 kills and three blocks. Stoa had five kills and 32 assists. Emily Harris contributed seven digs and four aces, and Owen had 10 digs. Mounsey again had a solid effort up front with five kills and three blocks. Marissa Fortier added four blocks.
In the KingCo title game, Woodinville defeated top-seeded Newport 25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 25-17. Both teams advance to the state tournament.
Liberty volleyball team in crucial match
The Liberty High School volleyball team, which has hopes of landing a Class 3A state tournament berth, meets KingCo Conference 3A champion Mount Si at 1 p.m. Saturday in a loser-out match in the Sea-King 3A District Tournament at Sammamish High School.
In action Thursday, Liberty lost to Eastside Catholic 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Eastside Catholic won the games 25-19, 25-12, 25-11. Kam McLain had 19 kills and Marlena Norwood 17 digs to lead Eastside Catholic.
Mount Si was surprised in the quarterfinals by Bainbridge 25-21, 25-21, 25-21.
