The Skyline High School girls soccer team won its third state championship in four years Saturday night after beating Bellarmine Prep 1-0 at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.
Junior Lianna Simms, a first-year varsity defender, scored the game’s only goal in the 22nd minute.
She lofted a perfectly executed free kick from about 18 yards out just out of the goal keeper’s reach into the top right corner of the goal.
“I saw the back side open, and I like hit it far,” she said after the game. “It’s a tough shot, but I don’t know if I could do it again.”
Skyline finished the season undefeated with a record of 18-0-2. Bellarmine Prep finished 17-3-1.
In other action, the Skyline Spartans football team advanced to the state semifinals after beating Central Valley 52-17 in Sammamish on Saturday.
