Seniors Logan Briggs, Luke Duschl and Kevin Hays each won two events and swam on two winning relays Thursday as they sparked the Liberty High School boys swimming team to a 108-71 season-opening victory against visiting Interlake at Julius Boehm Pool.
Briggs, Duschl and Hays helped the Patriots finish seventh at last year’s Class 3A state meet. The Patriots were the second-highest placing KingCo Conference 3A team at the meet. State champion Mercer Island was the highest.
Because of Briggs, Duschl and Hays along with some other key returnees and promising freshman Nick Klatt, the Patriots are optimistic about this season.
Liberty took first place in each event against Interlake, which finished second last year in the Class 2A state meet.
Briggs, who was second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle at state last season, won both events against the Saints. He captured the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 48.96 seconds and took the 500 freestyle in 4:52.62.
Duschl, who placed at state in two events last winter, won the 100 freestyle in 51.66 and captured the 100 backstroke in 1:00.44.
Hays took the 50 freestyle in 24.04 and won the 100 butterfly in 57.30.
Raymond Ha, of Liberty, won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.27 and Klatt captured the 200 individual medley in 2:06.68. Jesse Herrild, who competed at the state meet in diving last year, finished first with 160.90 points.
The Patriots won the 200 medley relay in 1:46.55. Duschl, Ha, sophomore Connor Biehl and Klatt composed the relay.
Liberty also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.67. Briggs, Josh Johnson, Biehl and Hays composed the relay.
The Patriots wrapped up the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:26.74. Briggs, Hays, Klatt and Duschl composed the relay. Briggs, Hays and Duschl also swam on the relay in the finals of the state meet last season.
