Issaquah High School boys swimming team nips Newport

The Issaquah High School boys swimming team captured the final event of the meet Tuesday as the Eagles defeated host Newport 89-87 at Mercer Island’s Mary Wayte Pool.
Willy Matsuda, Spencer McCulloh, Austin Melody and Brian Ruggles composed the 400 freestyle relay for Issaquah as the Eagles won a thrilling race in a state-qualifying time of 3 minutes, 25.44 seconds. The Eagles just edged Newport for first in the event. Newport was a close second in a state-qualifying time of 3:25.85.
Issaquah also took first place in the other two relays.
Matsuda, Melody, Gabe Florsheim and David Nam won the opening race of the meet, the 200 medley relay, in a state-qualifying time of 1:44.33. McCulloh, Florsheim, Nam and Ruggles composed Issaquah’s winning 200 freestyle relay, which took first in 1:34.63.
Melody won the 500 freestyle in 5:13.58 and took the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.38.
Other Issaquah first places came from Matsuda in the 100 backstroke, Ruggles in the 200 freestyle and Spencer Gevers in diving.
The victory boosted Issaquah’s KingCo Conference 4A record to 3-0.
