Skyline High School boys suffer first league hoop defeat

The Skyline High School boys basketball team got outscored 34-20 in the second half by visiting Ballard on Tuesday and lost 56-47 in a KingCo Conference 4A contest. The loss was the first in league play for Skyline, which had won its previous three KingCo contests and was first in the Crest Division.
Skyline led 27-22 at halftime. However, Ballard blew out the Spartans 18-8 in the third quarter to go ahead for good.
Seth Berger, a 6-foot-7 junior, led Ballard with 14 points. John Verduin, a 6-4 junior guard, added 12 points for the Beavers, who are 5-1 in league play and 7-4 overall.
Lucas Shannon, a 6-7 senior, topped Skyline with 14 points. Senior guard Will Parker had 10 points. Skyline went to 8-3 on the season.
In other action, Issaquah lost to Crown Division-leading Garfield 73-59. The Eagles, playing on their home court for just the second time this season, held a 20-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, Garfield outscored the Eagles 19-5 in the second period to stay in front for good.
Garfield’s Tucker Hayman, a 6-5 junior, led all players with 27 points. TreVaunte Williams, a 6-4 junior, also had 24 points for Garfield, which is 5-0 in league play and 7-2 overall.
Senior guard Nick Price topped Issaquah with 20 points. Teammate Fletcher Martin contributed 15 points. Issaquah dropped to 3-2 in league play and 9-2 for the season.
Issaquah entered the game coming off a successful road trip to Bend, Ore. The Eagles won the Summit Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30. Issaquah defeated West Albany, Ore., 61-55 in the title game. Ryan Sexton and Martin each had 14 points to lead the Eagles. Price had 13 points.
Issaquah hosts Skyline at 8 p.m. Friday.
In other Tuesday KingCo 4A action, it was Woodinville 41, Eastlake 38; Redmond 57, Roosevelt 52; and Bothell 61, Newport 52.
Fourth quarter costs Liberty boys
The Liberty High School boys basketball team stayed right with powerful Lake Washington for three quarters but the host Kangaroos pulled away in the final period Tuesday to win the KingCo Conference 3A/2A contest 61-48.
Lake Washington outscored Liberty 14-5 in the final quarter.
Liberty fell behind by seven points in the first quarter but fought back in the second period to trail just 34-30 at halftime.
Tynan Gilmore topped the Patriots with 17 points and Jordan West contributed 12 points. Liberty went to 1-4 in league play and 6-5 on the season. The Patriots host Interlake at 8 p.m. Dec. 6.
Darien Nelson-Henry, of Lake Washington, led all players with 24 points. Kelly Guy added 15 points for the Kangaroos, who are 4-1 in league play and 7-3 overall.
In other league action, it was Bellevue 54, Mount Si 37; Sammamish 61, Juanita 52; and Mercer Island 82, Interlake 47.
