Violet Eck

Violet Emily Hammer Eck, age 100, passed away at a local care facility July 8, 2012. Violet was born Feb. 7, 1912, in Spokane.

She was a graduate of Cheney Normal College, now known as Eastern Washington State College, Cheney, in elementary education and later earned her master’s degree in special education at that university. She was a devoted and caring elementary and special-education teacher during her working career of some 30 years.

Violet was one of four sisters born to Christopher Wilhelm Hammer and Carrie Ann Lewis Hammer. She and her sisters were all talented musicians and singers who appeared in many college and other social events in the Spokane area. She was also a talented debater who won several debate contests both in high school and college.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David J. Ek; and her sisters Elaine Mally, Grace Vandiver and Wilma Dick.

She is survived by her sons Steven Jon Ek, of Lake Charles, La., and Roger Bruce Ek and daughter-in-law Pauline Carroll Ek, of Sammamish; grandchildren Dagnye Ek Dore, Rika Ek Armentor and Jerald D. Ek; eight nephews and nieces; and six great-grandchildren.

Violet changed her name from Ek to Eck some years ago, as she was tired of being questioned about the spelling of her family name! She is remembered by all as a loving, caring and devout person who was a wonderful mother, and was greatly admired and respected by all who knew her.
