Liberty High School quarterback Robbie Thomas and a host of other Patriot starters were out with injuries when Liberty fell to Lake Washington, 38-7, Sept. 28.

Key Liberty starters including Thomas, linebackers Alex Batali and Matt Maggard, and cornerback Ashby Brown were among those sidelined by injuries, Liberty coach Steve Valach said.

“We’re a very thin squad in terms of numbers, which in the sport of football, is tough, because guys start going down and all of the sudden, you just don’t have a lot of depth,” he said. “So, that’s made it challenging.”

The Patriots’ only score came in the first quarter, when backup quarterback Kasper Lui Delange ran the ball in for a touchdown.

Liberty again struggled with turnovers in the game, Valach said, but he was encouraged by the team’s effort despite the long Patriot injury list.

“I think we had four or five turnovers, and then Lake Washington had a couple of long passes and we didn’t convert on a couple of fourth downs that we went for,” he said. “It was not for lack of effort. We just didn’t execute.”
