Bears roam on the Issaquah Valley Elementary School campus Wednesday. By Jake Kuper, Issaquah School District

A bear and three cubs paid a surprise visit Wednesday to Issaquah Valley Elementary School, prompting administrators to put the building into lockdown.

The unwelcome guests were spotted in the front yard of the school’s campus in downtown Issaquah.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife was called in and officers, with the help of bear-sniffing “super dog” Mishka, cleared the area. With the bears gone, all school functions returned to normal.

Report a potentially dangerous wild animal to the Department of Fish and Wildlife Dangerous Animal Hotline at 1-800-477-6224. Call 911 for emergencies.

The bears may be gone now for a while but they will return for certain. It is an invitation for tragedy if these animals are done with.

Hey! What’s wrong with responsibly dart-drugging them and driving them back to the woods? Isn’t that the right thing to do? Meanwhile, I hope the kids got to enjoy seeing them from the school windows, and that the teachers used it as a teachable moment about why the bears feel compelled to drift from their habitat into town.

Since my daughter goes to IVE and the fact I live next to the school. It was a reality check for me and some other parents who let little ones walk by themselves.
We live in the bears home. We also continue to build so seeing these animals will probably happen more. We have a pack of Coyotes at my complex all the time. My son was met by one leaving my Apartments. He wasn’t even off our stairs. People need to just pay attention. Keep your pets inside as well!
