Local runners made strides in the fight against colon cancer Nov. 4 when they banded together for the Get Your Rear in Gear event at Marymoor Park, winning an award for raising the most money.

Team Marcy’s Mojo was comprised of nearly 50 area family members, friends and neighbors who gathered to honor Marcy Rand, of Maple Hills. Rand died of colon cancer in July.

Her husband Gray Rand set out with the goal of $500 for the event but quickly blew past it, raising about $2,500 for colon cancer education, prevention and screening.

Also on the team were their three children — Jeffrey, David and Alexa Rand — who were joined by several of their classmates from Liberty High, Maywood Middle and Maple Hills elementary schools.

Team Marcy’s Mojo also had five top individual finishers of the 5K course, which was riddled with colon-themed obstacles.

Maywood students Marty Klatt, Zach Jeeter, David Rand and Nathan Moore took first, second, third and fourth places in the men’s 13-19 age division. In the women’s 13-19 division, Maywood student Grace Morford finished second.
