Anna Smith, a seventh grade student at Beaver Lake Middle School, has been invited to attend the 2013 US Youth Soccer National Development Camp in Phoenix. The program runs from Jan. 29 to Feb. 3.

Smith, a starting goalkeeper and captain of Crossfire’s U14 ECNL Reece team, was invited to the camp after a long selection process. It began with tryouts of about 200 girls from Washington for 40 spots on the state’s Elite Player Development team.

Having made the cut, Smith went on to compete in a Southern California showcase and take part in the region camp in Irvine, Calif., last summer. After being observed by scouts, Smith and two other girls from Washington were selected to take part in national camp.

While they’re in Arizona, Smith and 239 other players from across the country will be competing to fill 20 spots on the national team.
