Mary Jane Elliott

Mary Jane Elliott, of lssaquah, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the age of 79.

She was born Nov. 19, 1933, in Boyne City, Mich., the daughter of Harry and Clara Tompkins. She graduated from Boyne City High School and was the salutatorian of her class. After graduating from the University of Michigan Nursing School, she started her life’s work in nursing at Mercer Island Pediatrics. She then worked for Doctors Hospital, and finally at Swedish Hospital as head nurse of the nursery, and post partum, retiring in 1996.

She was an active church member and chorister of every church she belonged to in her lifetime. She was gifted musically, not only as an alto, but also at the piano and organ, and she served as a substitute organist for Emmanuel Episcopal Church, in Mercer Island, and St. Paul United Church of Christ in Ballard. Her passion was classical music, which led her to University Christian Church in the 2000s to sing under the direction of the late George Shangro.

She was married to Richard Gregory from 1954 to 1977 and had five children.

In 1979, she married Del Elliott and settled in the Ballard area of Seattle, where she and her husband lived for 25 years. After retiring from nursing, she dedicated her time to family and service in the church. When her husband retired in 1999, they moved to Providence Point, Issaquah, during the summer months and south during the winter months in their motor home. They were privileged to enjoy several tours of the United States and Canada until health concerns made it impractical to do so.

Survivors include several children and stepchildren: Steve (Laura) Gregory, Lisa (Don) Dell, Jim Gregory, Teri (Mike) Quaranta, Christina Elliott, Sherri Elliott and Steve (Sandy) Elliott. She is also survived by brother John (Jackie) Tompkins, sister-in-law Jane (Don) Stone, 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Tony Gregory and brother Jim Tompkins.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m., at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St. S., Issaquah, WA 98027. Remembrances may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Arrangements are by Flintoft’s Funeral Home, 392-6444.
