Washington was recently ranked the No. 5 state for cat ownership.

The statistic comes from the American Veterinary Medical Association’s U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook. Statewide, 39 percent of households include a cat.

Washington ranks at No. 6 among pet-owning states with 62.7 percent of households with a pet. Vermont topped the pet-owning states with 70.8 percent.

The survey is conducted every five years and includes information about pet ownership by state.

“This report reveals a tremendous amount of information about pets and their owners across the country; what’s constant and what has changed,” Dr. Douglas Aspros, American Veterinary Medical Association president, said in a statement. “One of the most important parameters that we look at is how well pet owners are doing at keeping their pets healthy.”
