County expands options for mattress recycling

King County recently added more options for residents to recycle old mattresses.

The county’s Take it Back Network is meant to reduce the number of mattresses headed for the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill near Issaquah. King County received about 90,000 mattresses, weighing more than 3,000 tons, for disposal at transfer stations and the landfill last year.

Mattresses contain several recyclable materials including polyurethane foam, steel, cotton and wood.

A Plus Removal & Recycling and Rubbish Works joined a growing number of retailers, repair shops, nonprofit organizations, waste haulers and recyclers to provide a convenient and safe reuse and recycling option for hard-to-recycle products.

Call A Plus Removal & Recycling at 253-737-4441 or Rubbish Works in Bellevue at 681-9233 to drop off a mattress or schedule a pick-up. Consumers pay a fee to cover recycling costs.
