Election 2013: Candidate Workshops offered

April 16, 2013

By Staff

Voters will decide important races this fall that will shape the future of the city.

Before campaign season starts, voters interested in running for public office can learn what it takes to be a candidate.

King County Elections is hosting two complimentary, two-hour 2013 Candidate Workshops to discuss important information about filing for various offices.

The workshops are open to members of the public, candidates, campaign managers, treasurers and staff. The program covers:

  • Filing for office in King County
  • Submitting local voters pamphlet information
  • Voter lists and data management
  • Campaign sign regulations
  • Basic public disclosure information

The classes will be from 2-4 p.m. April 25, and from 10 a.m. to noon April 27 at King County Elections, 919 S.W. Grady Way, Renton.

Those who plan to attend must RSVP by emailing election.operations@kingcounty.gov. The workshops will be cancelled if enrollment is low.

The period for candidates to file in person and online is from May 13-17.

In the city of Issaquah, the office of mayor and four City Council positions are open.

The positions are for four-year terms. Most candidates elected this fall will take office in January. The candidate elected to City Council Position 1, however, will take office once the election results are certified in November, because Councilman Joe Forkner was appointed to fill a vacancy earlier this year.

The council salary is $700 per month ($8,400 per year). The mayoral salary is $8,679 per month ($104,148 per year).

The open positions include:

  • City Council Position 1: Joe Forkner, incumbent
  • City Council Position 3: Eileen Barber, incumbent
  • City Council Position 5: Stacy Goodman, incumbent
  • City Council Position 7: Tola Marts, incumbent
  • Mayor: Ava Frisinger, incumbent

In addition to city offices, voters can learn more about open Issaquah School District and King County offices from King County Elections at http://1.usa.gov/10RJwHq.
