The two-day District 2 Tournament, at the par 72 Coyote Creek at Willows Run golf course May 7, was a success for both Issaquah and Skyline high school golfers.

Going into the 18th hole the second day, Issaquah High School sophomore Mersadie Tallman was leading by one stroke, before a double bogey bumped her final score to 157 for third place and a ticket to the girls golf 4A State Championship.

“It was good. I’m not disappointed, but I would have liked to have done better on the last hole,” Tallman said. “I had a great time, and it was nice out here and I got to miss school.”

As well, Issaquah’s Emily Chun won a three-person playoff to clinch her seat at state.

After missing the cut by three strokes the past two years, Skyline senior Brya Vowels finally earned her spot at the state tournament. Shooting an 89 for 14th the first day, Vowels advanced to the second round.

“My scores yesterday were amazing. I made some really long putts that I was like, ‘What, really I made that?’ she said.

After only two holes the next day, though, she was already five over par.

“Then, for the next, like, two or three holes I couldn’t get back,” she said. “But then, I just was like, ‘No.’ And, I started shooting pars.”

Staging a comeback, Vowels finished the next 16 holes for a 92, totaling 181 for the tournament and securing a spot for the first time at the state championship.

“It feels amazing,” she said. “I’m really proud of the way I was able to bring it back, because that is something I’ve worked all four years on.”

The 2013 4A State Championship is May 21-22 at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash. The boys tournament is also set to take place those two days, but at the Camas Meadows Golf Club.
