Baseball trio awarded $3,000 in scholarships

The Sammamish Little League has announced three recipients of this year’s Brock O’Connor Memorial Scholarship. They are Corbin Powers, of Skyline High School; Garrett Hughes, of Liberty High School; and Justin Vernia, of Issaquah High School.

The league’s scholarship committee awards a $1,000 scholarship each year to three graduating senior baseball players. The award recipients must have made a commitment to play baseball at the collegiate level, and demonstrated attributes that O’Connor did during his life.

O’Connor, a 1999 graduate of Issaquah, died at age 19 following an accident at his summer job. He played baseball for the Eagles and was well known in the community for his leadership and ability to motivate his peers and adults.

The Brock O’Connor Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in July 2000.
