VFW offers scholarships

The Veterans of Foreign Wars offers scholarship programs in the Issaquah School District to all levels of education.

The VFW Department of Washington rewards the Youth Essay Program for grades three to five, while the other two scholarships, Patriot’s Pen for grades six to eight and Voice of Democracy for grades nine to 12, include competition on the national level.

Scholarships for those up to grade eight take the form of savings bonds. High school scholarships, including awards of up to $30,000 for the national first-place winner, go directly to the recipient’s American university, college, vocational or technical school.

The local VFW hopes to boost participation in its scholarship program after only one submission from the Issaquah School District last year. Students do not have to have a connection with a veteran to participate. The organization will collect submissions through Nov. 1. Submit at the Issaquah School District front desk, 565 N.W. Holly St., or mail them to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Albert Larson Post 3436, P.O. Box 18, Issaquah, WA 98027.
