Join Team Survivor Northwest at Swedish/Issaquah for free fitness classes for female cancer survivors. “Active Women/Healthy Women” is from 6-7 p.m. Wednesdays starting Sept. 18.

The class, which is filled on a drop-in basis, will focus on building strength, but will also include stretching and cardio.

Team Survivor Northwest, a Seattle-based nonprofit, was started by Dr. Julie Gralow in 1995 when some of her patients asked her to supervise their triathlon training.

Now, Team Survivor Northwest has grown to 500 active members, and Associate Director Alicia Supernavage estimates that they have helped 1,500 women since 1995.

The classes are for women in all stages of treatment and recovery, and the exercises can be adapted to anyone’s fitness level. Team Survivor Northwest offers many other activities, including hiking, yoga, cycling, boating and triathlon training.

The programs are offered all around the Puget Sound region, in Seattle, on the Eastside and on the Olympic Peninsula.

“A lot of women come to our programs in addition to or instead of cancer support groups,” Supernavage said. “They find it helpful to talk to their peers outside of a hospital setting, in all stages of recovery.”
