The Washington Food Industry Association seeks contestants to compete in the annual Best Bagger State Championship on Oct. 22.

Grocery stores will hold their own in-store competitions to select their top employee to represent them at the State Championship “bag-off” (a timed competition between grocery baggers) to see who has not only the speed, but also the critical grocery arranging technique “in the bag.”

The Best Bagger State Championship is free and open for the public to attend. Learn how to enter the contest at www.wa-food-ind.org. The deadline for entering is Oct. 3. The competition will be from 3-4:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park, in Spokane.

In addition to winning a $1,500 cash prize, the Washington State Best Bagger Champion will get an all-expense paid trip to compete in the grocery industry’s acclaimed “National Bag-Off” sponsored by the National Grocers Association in February 2014, in Las Vegas.

This year, Andrew Borracchini, of Metropolitan Markets in Seattle, took home the national title along with a $10,000 grand prize and a “golden checkout lane” for the Admiral Way Metropolitan Market where he works.
