Peter Allen Maughan
September 24, 2013
Peter Allen Maughan, of Issaquah, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, while serving a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Veracruz, Mexico.
Peter was born July 8, 1993, in Seattle, the son of Mary Riley Maughan. He was raised in Issaquah and graduated in 2011 from Issaquah High School with high honors. He made many friends at IHS as he participated in football, Key Club, Jr. Statesman of America and National Honor Society.
Peter’s academic excellence led him to pursue his education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. At the completion of his first year, he earned acceptance into the Marriott School of Management Business and Finance Programs and was thrilled to receive the “Kearl letter.”
Peter was a voracious reader. His love of reading began with Harry Potter and extended to Les Miserables. He had a gift for math, which he often used to his advantage when playing poker with his buddies. He hiked all over the northwest with his best friends and his scouting brothers in BSA Troop 625. Even though he earned his Eagle rank he would say that there are not 10 essentials, there are three: his trademark blue Crocs, a Costco-sized bag of peanut M&Ms and baby wipes.
He had a huge brain and an even bigger heart. He was humble and humorous, sensitive and strong, loyal and loving. He gave the best hugs ever and will receive us one day with open arms when we join him in his heavenly home. Expect fireworks.
Survivors include his mother Mary Riley Maughan, of Issaquah; father George Maughan, of Polson, Mont.; “siblings” Kevin Nye, Daniel Toborg, Sky Hamblin, Mike Rennie, Chase Miller, Alec Balkman and Chris Hetherington; his “little sister” Hayley Nye; and loyal brothers too numerous to list. Peter was bathed in love by aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and members of the Issaquah First Ward. He lived a blessed life.
A celebration of his life on earth will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 15205 S.E. 28th St., Bellevue, on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in his honor may be made to: Issaquah First Ward Missionary Fund, P.O. Box 2792, Issaquah, WA 98027, or the Alpine District, Chief Seattle Council, Boy Scouts of America, P.O. Box 440408, Seattle, WA 98114.
