In the past few years, you have most likely heard people around you discussing Obamacare. Chances are you haven’t really paid much attention to what they were saying. I mean, as a teen, it doesn’t affect you right? Think again.
Before I begin, what is Obamacare?
In summary, Obamacare (a.k.a. the Affordable Care Act) is President Obama’s signature healthcare act, requiring you to purchase a private insurance plan, receive an exemption or pay a small tax. Those who cannot afford insurance receive government assistance or are granted an exemption. Long story short, Obamacare regulates the health insurance industry to ensure that all Americans are properly protected.
So, why should you be supportive of Obamacare?
First, Obamacare ensures that you aren’t dropped from insurance when you are sick, or are denied or charged more insurance based on gender or health status. It eliminates lifetime and annual limits, adds benefits such as free preventive services, reforms Medicare and requires nutrition facts at restaurants. Millions of uninsured Americans will now receive the healthcare that they need.
Besides, most people can keep their current insurance plan, so in no way will it negatively affect you. The U.S. is the only wealthy, industrialized country without universal healthcare, and it’s time to change that. Help your fellow Americans who are struggling, by supporting Obamacare.
