As the winter sports season comes to a close, five Liberty High School wrestlers aren’t ready to hang up their singlets just yet.

They have a date at the Tacoma Dome, where they will compete at the state tournament Feb. 21-22.

Joanna Moreira, Kyle Armstrong, Conner Small, Romney Noel and Quinn Magendanz will all compete among the state’s best at the 26th edition of the Mat Classic.

The five Patriots qualified after solid performances at the regional competition last week. Small (160) and Noel (170) had the highest Liberty finishes, earning first place in their divisions.

Liberty Lacrosse wins grant

The Liberty Lacrosse Club was one of 12 state programs to receive a $600 equipment grant from the Washington State Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse.

The grant will help local families seeking assistance to provide protective equipment for their children, such as helmets for boys and eye-gear for girls, along with sticks, gloves and pads.

“Regardless of financial circumstances it’s important that we open doors for young people and families to participate in youth sports and get in the game,” Dave Low, president of the Washington State Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse, said in a news release. “We’re excited to help local clubs and youth sports organizations jump start lacrosse in their communities.”
