Local students earn scholarships

Western Washington University student Hayley Beck, daughter of David and Carol Beck of Bellevue, has accepted an $8,793 Mildred M. Bain Scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year at Western Washington University, in Bellingham. Beck graduated from Issaquah High School in 2011 and is majoring in science education.

Benjamin Crowther, son of David and Mary Crowther, of Bellingham, received a $1,000 WWU Associated Students Diversity Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year. Crowther, a 2009 graduate of Skyline High School, is a senior with a 3.6 grade point average and is working toward a degree in Queer Identity as Shaped by Legal and Ethical Discourse in the Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Jillian Abendroth and Lindsay McCallister, of Issaquah, and Katherine Eastham, of Renton, all recently graduated with Bachelor of Arts degrees from Whitworth University, in Spokane.

Wesley Carter, of Renton, graduated May 20 from Clark University, in Worcester, Mass., with a Master of Arts in international development and social change.

Stephanie Matza, of Sammamish, recently graduated from the School of Science and Engineering with a Master of Science at Tulane University, in New Orleans.

Samuel Pfeifer, the son of Cindy and Jerry Pfeifer, of Issaquah, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Colorado College, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Amy Jackson, a 2003 graduate of Skyline High School, graduated from Willamette University’s joint degree graduate program on May 13, earning a Juris Doctorate and master’s in business administration. Read more

Jillian Nichols receives P.E.O. STAR scholarship

Jillian Nichols, a senior at Eastside Catholic High School, received a $2,500 P.E.O. STAR Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year.

Nichols, the daughter of Jeff and Kay Nichols, of Issaquah, has been accepted to and will attend Marquette University, where she plans to study sociology and women’s studies.

The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is based on excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success.

Carly MacKinnon receives scholarships from WSU 

Carly MacKinnon, the daughter of Leeanna and John Hayes, of Issaquah, was awarded a $1,000 College of Education Scholarship and a $500 Virginia L. Shaw Alumnae Scholarship at Washington State University.

Students receiving these awards must be certified into the College of Education and must demonstrate academic excellence and professional promise.

MacKinnon, a 2010 graduate of Liberty High School, plans to graduate from WSU In May 2014 with a degree in sport management and business. She is a member of the WSU Women’s Rugby Team, member of the Sport Club Federation Council for University Recreation and has been listed on the President’s Honor Roll.

Student’s art to be featured at Cornish College of the Arts

Kayti Dupar, a 2004 graduate of Issaquah High School and graduating senior art major at Cornish College of the Arts with a focus in painting and print art, was featured at Cornish’s 2012 Art and Design BFA Show in May.

The BFA Exhibition is the crowning achievement for graduating seniors from art and design, announcing their introduction to the community as emerging artists and designers. This exhibit showcases the work of 67 individuals representing a survey of new ideas, themes and techniques that amalgamate our contemporary visual landscape.
