Festival hosts volunteer sign-up party

September 3, 2013

Salmon Days organizers need all the help they can muster to accommodate the more than 150,000 visitors expected to stream into Issaquah for the annual festival Oct. 5-6.

Prospective volunteers can join the iconic festival at the annual Salmon Days volunteer sign-up party Sept. 10. Organizers need volunteers for a variety of activities, including manning booths, selling souvenirs and cleaning up after the event concludes.

“We look forward to seeing the smiling faces of longtime volunteers as well as meeting new members of the community, who we hope, like our salmon, return each year,” Salmon Days Festival Director Robin Kelley said in a statement.

WSDOT calls for tallying volunteers

September 3, 2013

From Oct. 1-3, the Washington State Department of Transportation needs about 400 volunteers to count the number of people who ride bikes or walk to their destinations for the department’s sixth annual survey.

During the 2012 survey, volunteers across Washington counted nearly 60,000 bicyclists and pedestrians who traveled by walking or biking.

“Counting bicyclists and pedestrians helps us more accurately measure demand, gauge the results of our investments and plan for future improvement projects,” Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson said in a press release. “We couldn’t document the number of people walking and biking without the help of many volunteers from across the state.”

Volunteers needed for cancer prevention study

October 23, 2012

The 2013 Issaquah Relay was selected to serve as an enrollment site for the Cancer Prevention Study 3, part of the American Cancer Society’s research efforts to better understand the link between lifestyle choices and the disease.

The position is fully supported by the relay planning committee, CPS-3 study coordinator and American Cancer Society staff partner to ensure the enrollment recruitment process runs smoothly.

Nightmare at Beaver Lake frighteners needed for Halloween haunt

September 25, 2012

Nightmare at Beaver Lake organizers need actors to frighten, spook and go bump in the night as the Halloween haunt prepares to terrorize the Sammamish Plateau.

Organizers plan actor training for Oct. 13-14 for actors with two or fewer years of experience in the haunt. More experienced volunteers can attend, too, because the show changes each year. Training runs from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Beaver Lake Park. Participants should bring a bag lunch and dress appropriately for the weather.

Volunteers can also register for make-up training. The make-up session runs from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 14. Previous make-up volunteers interested in participating again should email Jeeprider78@aol.com.

Organizers need vendors, volunteers for Independence Day

June 5, 2012

Organizers need vendors and volunteers to make the Down Home 4th of July and Heritage Day Celebration — Issaquah’s annual Independence Day celebration — a success.

The action starts at 10 a.m. July 4 as participants gather and register for the Kids, Pets ‘n’ Pride Parade. The parade starts at 11 a.m.

Revelers then head to Veterans’ Memorial Park for a hay hunt, three-legged and gunnysack races, pony rides, face painting, bouncy houses, and a slug race and beauty pageant. Participants must provide their own slugs. Save room for a pie-eating contest at about 1:30 p.m.

In order to present the celebration, organizers need volunteers to participate in setup and tear-down, and to work in the retail area and at activity stations.

Organizers offer booths to nonprofit organizations, arts and crafts vendors, and commercial ventures.

Find the application forms for the parade, vendors and volunteers at www.salmondays.org/4th-of-july.html.

Come out for Relay for Life

May 29, 2012

The 2012 Issaquah Relay for Life takes place this weekend at Skyline High School.

The two-day event has a simple concept. Teams are formed. Each team must raise a certain amount for the American Cancer Society. And donors pledge money for every lap walked at a local track. The overnight event allows participants to honor cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease.

With the idea that cancer never sleeps, team members will take turns walking around the track through the night at the event that starts at noon Saturday and ends with closing ceremonies at 8 a.m. Sunday.

The event features overnight camping on the track’s infield as well as games, competitions and music to keep everyone active.

The Issaquah event, held at Skyline High School the past few years due to construction at Issaquah High School, is 11th overall in the Great West Division, a 12-state region.

The highlight is the luminaria ceremony, where community members place illuminated bags, dedicated to someone touched by cancer, around the track, with relay participants walking one silent lap in their honor.

The goal is to collect $300,000 in donations for the American Cancer Society, according to Gwen Schweitzer, coordinator of this year’s event.
