Skyline taps new lacrosse coach

Sam Hutson, a Maryland native and former assistant at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, will be Skyline High School’s head boys lacrosse coach starting in the 2014 spring season.

Hutson spent the 2013 season at Nathan Hale, where the Raiders compiled a 17-4 record and won the program’s first state championship. He previously coached the boys junior varsity squad in 2009-10 at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, S.C.

“Lacrosse has a very bright future at Skyline High School. I’m extremely excited about this opportunity,” Hutson said in a news release. “We are going to do our very best to make (lacrosse) a highly competitive, rewarding experience for Skyline student-athletes.”

Local players help lacrosse team win national titles

Lacrosse hasn’t been recognized as an official high school sport in Washington, so it’s often difficult for local players to compete when they go up against more established East Coast programs.

Don’t tell that to the Team Washington Cohos, a group of sophomores from the Puget Sound area who dominated a pair of East Coast tournaments in July.

Four of the players attend Issaquah High School, and along with Issaquah head coach Brandon Fortier, they spent the better part of two weeks successfully playing at high levels.

Mitchell Undi will play lacrosse for Wingate

July 23, 2013

Mitchell Undi, an Issaquah High School graduate, will play for the Wingate University men’s lacrosse program in North Carolina starting in the 2014 season.

Undi, a defender, helped lead Issaquah to a 19-1 record in 2012. He also played for the Washington state team, which finished 12th nationally in 2012.

Wingate, an NCAA Division II program, will compete for the first time in the South Athletic Conference in 2014. The Bulldogs finished 2-14 last season under first-year coach Michael Lawson.

Some say the third time is the charm. For Katie Bucy, it was.

The Skyline High School junior had been to the U.S. Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament twice before, but when she and her team outscored a New Hampshire/Vermont regional squad, 9-6, to win the title May 26, it was a first.

The Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association has announced its 2013 All-State and All-Conference teams for Boys Varsity Division I and Division II high school lacrosse.

New lacrosse program formed on Eastside

The Liberty Lacrosse Club has garnered enough interest to expand its program to include players younger than high school on the Eastside.

The expansion includes young players from the east side of Issaquah, Renton Highlands and Newcastle. Previously, young Eastside players have played in Issaquah Youth Lacrosse.

The club is part of the Greater Eastside Lacrosse League, which organizes and governs lacrosse on the Eastside from as far north as Woodinville and Bothell all the way down to Tahoma in Maple Valley.

“Every community on the Eastside has a program these days,” Brian Rinkenberger, youth director for the Liberty Club, said.

Tahoma defeats Skyline

COVINGTON — Tahoma cruised to its third win of the season behind five two-goal performances in a 12-9 boys high school lacrosse defeat of Skyline on April 8 at Tahoma High School in Covington.

Nate Godey, Brody Sullivan, Hudson Taylor, Jake Hanson and Dakoda Barger all had two-goal performances for Tahoma as they overcame a 6-5 Skyline lead at the half with four third-quarter goals to take a 9-7 lead going into the final quarter. In the fourth, Tahoma outscored the Spartans 3-2 to cruise to the win.

Skyline’s Tyler Johnson led all scorers with four goals and two assist.

Skyline hangs on for win over Woodinville

April 9, 2013

WOODINVILLE – Cannon Gardner tallied four goals as Skyline pulled away in the third for a 13-11 boys high school lacrosse win over Woodinville on April 4 at Woodinville High School.

The win was the fourth of the spring for the Spartans.

Woodinville took a one-goal lead in the first-quarter, and then gave up five in the second to trail Skyline 7-4 at the half. In the third, the Spartans kept scoring, netting six goals to Woodinville’s three.

Issaquah defeats Holy Names, 20-6

BELLEVUE — Haley Mincin scored five goals as Issaquah earned its first high school girls lacrosse win of the season in a 20-6 defeat of Holy Names on March 18 at Robinswood Park in Bellevue.

Issaquah was firing on all cylinders offensively, as several players scored multiple times each during the matchup. Suzy Emerson, Miranda Hansen and Katy Bucy contributed three goals each in the win.

Holy Names had a hard time getting things going against a tough Issaquah squad as it found itself down 10-4 at the half. Wendy Donier led Holy Names in scoring with four goals.
