Dawn Appel

Dawn spent her early years in West Lawn, Chicago, and always kept the traditions, culture and food of Chicago close to heart.

From an early age, Dawn Kusch was known for her kindness of heart. Dawn was a person who knew what she wanted and would work to make this a reality.

Sometimes, her sisters accused her of being bossy. To this, Dawn would reply, “This is not bossy. This is leadership.”

People naturally gravitated to Dawn and because of this she was known as a family builder. Wherever Dawn went, she left behind communities she brought together.

After graduating from Loyola University of Chicago, Dawn moved to California. There she met Casey and described him to her mother as “so nice . . . I wasn’t ready for him.” Ready or not, Dawn fell in love and married. Dawn and Casey soon moved and set roots in Issaquah. In 1997, they were blessed by the gem of their lives — their son Alex.

It didn’t take Dawn long to extend her family. Dawn’s method was through a good party — her favorite being an annual pre-Thanksgiving dinner. Here, Dawn would provide a huge meal for friends and adamantly refused any help. To Dawn, this was her gift.

Dawn will be dearly missed by those she brought together. Dawn is survived by her husband Casey; son Alex; mother Marilyn; father Gregory; sisters Kelly and Nikki; second family Kenneth, Elizabeth and Noma; as well as the communities of Klahanie, Newport High School, her son’s soccer team, those moved by her story on CaringBridge; and many more. We know our “Weema” is somewhere beautiful, where she is bringing wayward souls together for another fantastic party.

Those wishing to offer a monetary gift may directly donate to Dawn’s family by mailing a check payable to Dawn Appel Memorial Fund to J. Wikrent, 459 209th Ave. N.E., Sammamish, WA 98074; or donate in Dawn Appel’s name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
