Issaquah snowboarder impresses at nationals

Isabella Gomez, a 12-year-old Issaquah resident, earned second place overall at the United States of America Snowboard Association 25th Annual Nationals Tournament.

The competition, held March 29 through April 4 in Copper Mountain, Colo., brings the country’s best snowboarders together. Isabella competed in the Breaker Girls (12-13) age division.

Liberty sports will move to 2A next season

Liberty High School sports teams will compete in the 2A classification for a two-year period beginning in the 2014-2015 school year.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released enrollment numbers showing that Liberty, at 891.8, is the size of a 2A school. Schools with less than 990.8 students, but more than 472, are considered 2A.

In the recent past, the Patriots have opted up to the 3A level, despite its stature as one of the state’s smallest 3A schools, but this time around administrators have decided to test the 2A waters.

Early registration for Issaquah Little League ends Jan. 7

Enrollment fees for Issaquah Little League will increase by $25 after Jan. 7, the end of the early registration period.

The league offers T-Ball through major baseball for boys and T-Ball through junior fast-pitch softball for girls.

The growing program has more than 800 players, 150 coaches and 58 teams playing on local fields, including the newly turfed Dodd Field.

When Pat Robey decided she wanted to get back in shape in 2002, she never imagined she would be breaking world records six months later.

Robey stumbled upon her gym, Headquarters Health and Fitness, while in pursuit of a place with a tanning bed close to her work. She’d been trying to get in shape at another gym, but decided she needed a personal trainer for accountability. She also never planned to enter weight-lifting competitions.

Local athletes sign letters to play college sports

Several area high school athletes recently signed a National Letter of Intent during the NCAA’s early signing period from Nov. 13-20:

  • Katie Bucy, Lindenwood (Mo.) women’s lacrosse: Skyline High School senior had 35 goals, 20 assists as a junior en route to Division II scholarship offer.
  • Derek Chapman, Washington State University baseball: Issaquah High School outfielder hit .350, earned All-KingCo Conference second-team honors as a junior.
  • Rachel Lorentson, Central Washington University women’s basketball: The 6-foot-1 forward has a deadly outside shot, and transferred to Eastlake High School after three seasons in Meridian, Idaho.

Registration opens for Little League

Registration of the 2014 Issaquah Little League Baseball and Softball is now open for all boys and girls ages 5 to 15 within the league boundaries.

The league offers T-Ball through major baseball for boys and T-Ball through junior fast-pitch softball for girls.

Issaquah’s Team AMEX is set to fight Dec. 7

Issaquah mixed martial arts fighters Dex Montenegro and Amy Cadwell will be on the card at CageSport MMA’s show Dec. 7 at the Emerald Queen Casino.

The duo will each be fighting, but the happily engaged couple will also be rooting for each other.
