Hurricane Sandy upends marathon plans for Issaquah runner

Brian Gallagher, a longtime runner from Issaquah, planned to race in the New York City Marathon to raise funds for Camp Korey, a Carnation organization for children suffering from serious medical conditions.
Gallagher, 44, arrived in the Big Apple not long before organizers canceled the race.
The area bore scares from Hurricane Sandy. Long traffic backups on expressways resulted as motorists jockeyed for gasoline. Darkness shrouded parts of Manhattan as Gallagher’s plane descended to New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport.
Final Cougar Mountain trail run offers 20-mile, 50-kilometer races

Organizers of the popular SCOTT Cougar Mountain Trail Run Series at King County’s Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park have saved the toughest day of racing for last.
After runs of five, eight, 10 and 13 miles earlier this year, trail-run enthusiasts will have their choice of participating in races of 20 miles or 50 kilometers (31.06 miles) Oct. 28.
King County launches geocaching at parks

King County Parks launched a GPS-driven treasure hunt Oct. 6 to recognize land protected in the past 30 years.
Participants can join the King County Conservation Futures GeoTour. The treasure hunt to 20 King County Parks cache sites is designed to raise awareness about the 111,000 acres of land the Conservation Futures Program has preserved in the past 30 years.
The initial 190 people to fill a GeoTour Passport with 20 unique stamps found in cache boxes earn a commemorative coin.

The first parkland purchased using Conservation Futures Program dollars consisted of 1,400 acres on Cougar Mountain.

Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day comes to Duthie Hill Park

Duthie Hill Park hosts Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day on Saturday, as Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance and Cascade Bicycle Club offer a free mountain biking event.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and includes trail riding, a children’s obstacle course, a jump show from local and pro riders, a free barbecue and prizes at the park near Issaquah. The event is open to all ages, and parents can ride with children.
Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day is a yearly celebration meant to encourage communities around the globe to join together and ride mountain bikes with youths. In 2011, the Duthie Hill Park event hosted more than 100 children.
Kokanee fun run is Oct. 20 at Lake Sammamish State Park

On Oct. 20, the Bellevue-Issaquah Chapter of Trout Unlimited is presenting the inaugural Run with the Kokanee at Lake Sammamish State Park.
Parking for this event is available near the main gate, at 2000 N.W. Sammamish Road, and will require a $10 fee or a Washington State Parks Discover Pass.
Those registering for either the 5k or 10k walk/run can save $10 on the entry fee when registering for the race on or before Oct. 7. Those entering the day of the race will be charged $40 and $45, respectively. Those wishing to enter early online may do so at www.tu-bi.org.

In 2002, Jeff Skiba, then a senior at Skyline High School, won the 3A state high jump championship. But it wasn’t just his 6-foot, 10-inch jump that was impressive — Skiba had one of his legs amputated as an infant.
Olympian Jennie Reed is Salmon Days grand marshal

Salmon Days Festival organizers tapped cyclist Jennie Reed, a silver medalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics and Issaquah High School alumna, to serve as grand marshal in the celebration’s Grande Parade.
Reed, a 1996 Issaquah High graduate, won a silver medal in women’s team pursuit, a cycling event, last month at the London Olympics.
Salmon Days returns to downtown Issaquah for a 43rd outing Oct. 6-7. The festival opens at 10 a.m. Oct. 6 as the Grande Parade starts inching through the business district.
Reed and the U.S. team of Sarah Hammer, Dotsie Bausch and Lauren Tamayo finished in 3 minutes, 19.727 seconds for silver. Great Britain earned the gold in the event and Canada claimed the bronze.

Evergreen Enduro Tiger Mountain Bike Race comes to Issaquah Alps

For the first time, the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance will present the inaugural Evergreen Enduro Tiger Mountain Bike Race on Sept. 22.
More than 150 racers will assemble in the upper Tiger Mountain Summit parking lot off highway 18 between 8 and 9 a.m.; racing will get underway at 10 a.m.
All proceeds from the race will go toward building and maintaining mountain bike trails on Tiger Mountain, which have been in operation for the past 20 years, but have never served as a venue for a race.
