Spartans subdue Eagles in conference opener

April 8, 2014

The fastpitch rivalry between the Issaquah Eagles and Skyline Spartans always has intensity, and last week’s clash to open Class 4A KingCo Conference play was no different.

Facing off against former teammates Winter Ridgeway and Tia Hedman, the Spartans used a fourth-inning surge and rallied past the Eagles, 5-3, on April 1 at Skyline High School.

Caroline Bowman, one of six freshmen starters for Skyline, was superb in leading the comeback. She used her fastball and rise ball effectively to strike out 11 hitters, while limiting the Eagles to five hits and no walks.

It doesn’t have the same energy as the football or basketball rivalries, but anytime Liberty and Hazen high schools meet on the diamond, it’s always a battle between familiar foes.

Just three miles separate the two schools, and despite the fact they reside in different school districts, many of the students grew up together playing in youth leagues.

Skyline’s Sam Lawrence pitches Spartans past Garfield Bulldogs

April 1, 2014

After starting the season with three losses, the Skyline High School baseball team was hungry for a win, and the Spartans satisfied their appetites March 26.

Skyline got a dominating performance from starting pitcher Sam Lawrence, and Jason Santiago drove in a pair of runs at the plate as the host Spartans earned a 4-0 victory over the Garfield Bulldogs in a Class 4A KingCo Conference opener.

The Spartans scored only five runs in nonconference defeats to O’Dea, Auburn Riverside and Eastside Catholic. But they managed enough support for Lawrence, a 6-foot junior left-hander, who stymied Garfield’s offense.

Good luck to opposing hitters trying to reach Issaquah High School’s outfield this year.

Opponents will find little wiggle room in an Eagles outfield that can compete with the best in the state.

Patriots’ coach to rely on youth

March 11, 2014

It’s always easier to do something the second time around, just ask Liberty High School softball coach Zach Bartholomew.

Bartholomew is heading into his second year leading the Patriots, and with a year under his belt, both he and the girls have a better idea of who they are and what they need to do as a team to bring the Liberty program back to previous levels of success.

“It’s always great coming into something that you’re a little bit used to,” he said. “I’m not brand new to the program, the players are not brand new to me, so it helps me out a lot.”

Spartans look to solidify around star senior duo

March 11, 2014

Chris Tamminen has a lot of questions to answer heading into the 2014 baseball season, but he’s got at least two known quantities to work with.

The Skyline High School coach expects big things from ace pitcher Drew Lunde, a senior lefthander who has committed to play at Washington State University. Offensively, Tamminen isn’t sure what his batting order will look like, except for the fact that senior third baseman Jason Santiago will hit third and be expected to drive in plenty of runs.

Lunde will need to be good this year after Skyline lost three workhorses to graduation — Corbin Powers, Arthur Stromquist and Jacob Gleichman combined to throw about two-thirds of the innings for the Spartans in 2013.

Recreation league crowns its champs

March 11, 2014

The Warriors are winners of the championship title in the Issaquah Parks & Recreation boys ninth- and 10th-grade basketball league, the department announced Feb. 28.

The players — Austin Beeks, Luc Gelle, Kartik Mahajan, Dane Petterson, Jack Simpson, Matthew Swanson, Kosuke Terada, Keanu Wong, Oliver Young and Erik Ke — under the leadership of coaches Rob Young and Eric Swanson racked up a solid 8-2 record before advancing to the championship game.

The Warriors won in sudden-death double overtime in a semifinal game to advance to the championship to defend their crown. The team then went on to defeat the Timberwolves for the title.

With its top-three scorers from last season now playing college basketball, the Skyline High School Spartans girls basketball team has had to find new offensive sources this year.

Senior wing Shelby Kassuba is one of the players who has stepped forward, and she nearly led the Spartans to an important Class 4A KingCo Conference win Dec. 18.

Kassuba scored a career-high 24 points, including 16 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as Skyline’s rally fell short in a 61-58 loss to the visiting Bothell Cougars.

Kassuba’s outburst upped her scoring average to 12.2 points per game, and it gave Spartans coach Greg Bruns something to smile about.

Rob Reese knows there are some impressive names that make up the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Heck, he’s coached against many of them in his 20 years at the helm of Issaquah High School’s program. He just never figured he would join their ranks before he retired.

Reese was inducted into the hallowed halls Nov. 24.

Drew Lunde signs to play WSU baseball

November 26, 2013

If KingCo Conference baseball fans are looking for a player that resembles Los Angeles Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw, they might find their match in Skyline High School southpaw Drew Lunde.

Last season, Lunde was the staff ace for Skyline, which won the KingCo Crown Division title and finished with a 17-7 record. His stat line was impressive — a 1.73 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings, and an opponents’ batting average of .138.

It may come as no surprise that Lunde’s big-league role model is Kershaw, a three-time all-star and two-time National League Cy Young Award winner.
