Liberty baseball team makes state’s final four and other notes

Something special is brewing on the Liberty baseball diamond.

The Patriots are in the state’s final four, after a weekend in which they eliminated Tumwater and then North Kitsap at Centralia’s Wheeler Field May 23.

Nate Steffens threw a complete game shutout, while Torey Anderson collected three hits to propel the Patriots to a 3-0 win over Tumwater. The Thunderbirds came into the contest with a 16-6 record and consistently found themselves in the top 10 of state rankings.

Liberty continued to stun spectators with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over North Kitsap. Read more

The Liberty High School soccer team was a bit shorthanded for its May 16 district championship game.

But only six minutes after Mitch Keller scored the equalizer, Redmond’s Keito Suzuki got free behind the Eagles’ defense and scored the 75th-minute winner, giving the visiting Mustangs a 2-1 victory on May 7 in a loser-out game of the Class 4A KingCo Conference tournament at Gary Moore Stadium.

Lopsided victories don’t happen very often for Class 4A KingCo Conference boys soccer teams, so Skyline High School’s blowout of Woodinville on April 21 was a cause for celebration for the Spartans.

Patriots drop match to rival Highlanders, 2-1

The Hazen High School student turnout was small.

Not more than a dozen students made the very short trip to Liberty High School March 19, where their boys soccer team took on the rival Patriots.

Even with their lack of numbers, the cheers that emanated from the section after the game ended in a 2-1 Hazen victory were deafening.
