Skyline soccer shows heart in capturing third

Recovering from a heartbreaking loss isn’t something the Skyline Spartans wanted to do at the Class 4A state soccer tournament, but they did it successfully last weekend.

Skyline got goals from three of its top offensive players — Lindsey Fujiwara, Amanda Johnston and Kelli Sullivan — to earn a 3-1 win over the Gig Harbor Tides in the match for third and fourth places Nov. 22 at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Eagles, Patriots make early exits in state soccer tourneys

Both Liberty and Issaquah girls soccer teams made early exits from the 2014 state 2A and 4A soccer tournaments.

Issaquah was sent packing after a second round loss to Gig Harbor on Nov. 15, while Liberty’s season ended with a 4-3 loss to Shorecrest on Nov. 15.

Spartans qualify for state 4A soccer semifinals

November 18, 2014

The Olympia Bears started their state quarterfinal match perfectly. Within five minutes, they held a 1-0 lead against the Skyline Spartans, scoring on a Sophie Wood goal.

That lead lasted all of three minutes before the Spartans tied the game, which held for the rest of the first half.

Soccer teams host Down syndrome awareness night

On April 29, 2002, Melissa Wyman and husband Kevin won what she calls, “the ticket of a lifetime.”

It was the day the Liberty High School soccer coach welcomed her son, Campbell, now a sports-loving, determined 12-year-old that just happens to have Down syndrome.

“It wasn’t easy in the beginning. You don’t know what to expect,” Wyman said. “You hear people say he’s not going to be able do this or that, but I sure wasn’t about to let someone tell me what or who my son should be. He will be Campbell.”

Skyline soccer wins without one of its best players

The Skyline Spartans have been without one of their top offensive players, and while they haven’t been playing their best soccer, they’ve found ways to win.

Lauren Carson scored the first two goals, and Ke’ala Louie added an insurance goal late in the second half as the visiting Spartans broke away for a 3-0 victory over the Redmond Mustangs Oct. 9 in a Class 4A KingCo Conference match.

In wins over Newport and Redmond last week, the Spartans had to find ways to compensate for the loss of senior forward Amanda Johnston, a University of Washington commit who was injured in a Sept. 30 match at Mount Si.

Skyline downs Eastlake in KingCo soccer opener

September 30, 2014

The Eastlake Wolves girls soccer team had a solid nonconference run, going undefeated and outscoring their five opponents, 17-1.

But things got much tougher when Eastlake had to turn its attention to matches that matter, including Class 4A perennial powerhouse Skyline in the KingCo Conference opener.

Skyline got goals from Ke’ala Louie, Candace Hunter and Gabby Hart, and wore down Eastlake with speed at both ends of the field in a 3-1 victory Sept. 25 at Spartan Stadium.

Issaquah plays No. 1 Maria Carrillo to 1-1 overtime draw

September 23, 2014

The Issaquah High School Eagles (3-1-1) secured a 1-1 tie against the top-ranked team in the country, Maria Carrillo, of Santa Rose, California, on the road Sept. 20 on the Pumas’ home field.

Maria Carrillo (7-0-1), ranked No. 1 in the Top Drawer Soccer Fab 50 and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America co-No. 1, entered having outscored opponents 38-1 prior to the match against Issaquah, ranked No. 25 in the Fab 50 poll.
