Spartan Kaleb Strawn’s soccer career is starting to soar

Kaleb Strawn has never been able to physically dominate opponents on the soccer pitch. Instead, he uses intelligence and speed to make the other team miserable.
This spring, the 5-foot-7 Strawn led the Skyline Spartans to their first undefeated KingCo Conference season. The central midfielder supplied a single-season school record for points with his 11 goals and 13 assists, and it helped him lock up an NCAA Division II collegiate scholarship offer from Saint Martin’s University in Lacey.
Local soccer teams advance to regionals

After winning the U.S. Youth Soccer Washington State Championships, 13 Seattle-area teams qualified to compete in the regional championship June 17-23 in Honolulu.
Two teams from Preston were among the champions. The Eastside FC Boys 94 Red team and the Eastside FC Girls 95 Red team qualified to join more than 240 of the West’s top teams as they compete for the regional title.
Eastside FC Girls 95 Red will compete in the 17-and-under age division, while Eastside FC Boys 94 Red will play in the 18-and-under age division.
Regional winners will earn a spot in the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships July 22-28 in Kansas.
Skyline blanked in KingCo title match to Inglemoor, 4-0

Skyline High School’s 11-game soccer winning streak came to an end May 7 at the KingCo 4A Championship game, where Inglemoor went 4-0 for the title.
“They have some really talented players over there,” said David Kim, a sophomore midfielder for the Skyline Spartans. “They challenged, and they beat us. It’s hard, but I feel like we’ve just got to compete more, and if we compete more, we’ll do really well in state, with that passion and heart.”
Liberty nets another draw with Mercer Island

The Liberty High School boys soccer team has gone toe to toe with Mercer Island twice this season, both games resulting in draws.
Skyline goes undefeated into Kingco championship

The undefeated Skyline High School boys soccer team continued its perfect season and secured a spot in the KingCo championship game by shutting out Eastlake, 4-0, April 23.
“I thought we did well, and possessed the ball and made them work hard. When they made mistakes, we took advantage of them,” Skyline coach Don Braman said. “It’s going to be a tough road ahead of us, but the nice thing is we have worked hard to put ourselves in a good position.”

The Spartans seized on the opportunity to score early in the game when senior Ryan Shim scored off a corner kick by his fellow classmate, Kaleb Strawn in the eighth minute.
“It was a good thing,” Braman said about Shim’s goal. “He’s a real intelligent player, and we like getting him up field on those corners because he promises he’ll score.”
Interlake, rain can’t stop Liberty boys soccer

On a cold, drizzly Friday night, the home stands at Interlake High School’s soccer stadium were nearly empty. The bleachers on the visitors’ side, however, were comparably lined with loyal Liberty soccer supporters, huddled in blankets, holding umbrellas and shouting, “Go blue.”
The Liberty fans did not fill the entire visiting section, but the supporters’ dedication on an April 12 game day, during spring break no less, showed that the Patriots’ boys soccer team is definitely worth rooting for.
Liberty easily gave them something to cheer for, soundly defeating Interlake, 4-0, to remain undefeated with a 9-0-1 record.
Skyline hangs on for win over Woodinville

WOODINVILLE – Cannon Gardner tallied four goals as Skyline pulled away in the third for a 13-11 boys high school lacrosse win over Woodinville on April 4 at Woodinville High School.
The win was the fourth of the spring for the Spartans.
Woodinville took a one-goal lead in the first-quarter, and then gave up five in the second to trail Skyline 7-4 at the half. In the third, the Spartans kept scoring, netting six goals to Woodinville’s three.
Liberty soccer goes undefeated in first week

The Liberty boys soccer team began the 2013 season with two wins against nonconference opponents.
The Patriots defeated Everett, 4-1, March 12. Jared Bales put Liberty on the board first with a goal in the 23rd minute. Noah Anderson added another score, while Jake Ericksen had two more.
Local athletes sign with colleges

Two Issaquah and four Liberty high school seniors will officially take their athletic talents to the collegiate level, signing letters of intent to play for universities across the country.
Liberty soccer players Nicolle Marlow, Kailiana Johnson, Katie Noonan and Kiana Hafferty made their college commitments official in a special signing day ceremony at the school Feb. 6. The Patriots soccer team placed fourth in state this year.
Both Marlow and Johnson will play for Washington State University, while Noonan will play for Southeastern Louisiana University and Hafferty will suit up for Seattle Pacific University.
Issaquah grad signs with Seattle Reign FC

Former Issaquah High School and University of Washington soccer standout Kate Deines will once again get the opportunity to play in front of the hometown crowd after it was announced that she has signed with Seattle Reign FC.
The club is a part of the new eight-team National Women’s Soccer League set to begin play in spring 2013. The team will play its home matches at Starfire Sports Stadium in Tukwila.
“I can’t begin to describe how excited I am to play professionally in Seattle, before my family and friends,” Deines said in a statement posted on the team’s Facebook page. “The support in this city is awesome, and now to have a professional team in Seattle, I can’t even imagine the atmosphere for our home matches.”
