Track and field athletes know the maxim well — it’s not how you start the season, but how you finish that truly matters.
A couple of Issaquah High School’s top athletes are going through that process this season. During an April 23 home meet against Class 4A KingCo Conference opponents Eastlake and Inglemoor, seniors Ellie Clawson and Ray Littles each sought improvements after slow starts to the season.

It was another successful year for Issaquah community sports.
Athletes at the three district high schools took home conference titles, state championships and, in Liberty’s case, made history in 2014.
Here is a recap of the year’s top sports stories, in no particular order:

Skyline’s 1,600 relay state title anchors fourth-place team trophy
The Skyline High School girls track and field team capped a solid 2014 season last weekend at the Class 4A state championships by winning the fourth-place trophy.
Skyline scored 35 points to finish behind Richland (37), Camas (48) and Federal Way (72), which successfully defended its state championship at Star Track XXXII, held May 29-31 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Liberty High School junior Cherelle Demps continued a stellar track season with four wins at the KingCo 3A/2A Championship.
Demps won the 100 and 200 meter races and was a part of both the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relay teams that took home gold. The 4×100 relay team lowered their two-week old school record to 49.39 seconds.
Danielle Demps won the triple jump. Kelli Anderson won the high jump. Kelley Johnson broke a 1995 school record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.64, and also won the 100 hurdles.

As the Liberty High School track and field teams’ seniors gathered for a picture in what was the last home meet of their careers April 24, Patriots coach Mike Smith couldn’t believe how small the group was.
“It was kind of like, ‘Wow, that’s all we’ve got?’” he said. “But that’s pretty typical.”
The Patriots are indeed young this year, Smith said, but their youth didn’t hinder them as the boys and girls defeated Interlake April 24.

Liberty High School senior Collin Olson, of Newcastle, announced April 11 that he will run cross-country and track and field at Seattle University next year.
He was a member of coach Mike Smith’s historic cross-country team this year. The Liberty boys team made its first state appearance in school history last fall.

There might not be a better situation for Dorie Dalzell to land in at the collegiate level, even though the school she chose wasn’t the one she thought she would.
Dalzell’s father and grandfather are University of Kansas alumni, and her boyfriend is currently attending the Division I athletics powerhouse in Lawrence, Kan. It was those factors that had her heavily leaning toward Washington, Arizona and Columbia for her running career at the next level, simply because she wanted a change of scenery.
Kansas was the last school Dalzell visited, and a motivational video she watched with the coaches cinched her decision.
