Issaquah track prepares for KingCo league championships

May 8, 2012

With the season winding to a close, Issaquah High School was scheduled to head to Juanita High School on May 9 to compete in the KingCo League championship meet.

The Eagles are having an exceptional year, especially on the girls side. Stars include Eva Perry, the defending state champion and school record holder in the pole vault; McKenna Hogan, who has qualified for state in jumps and sprints; and Cayla Seligmann, Ellie Clawson and Ellie Hendrikson, who have all done well in distance events this year.

Issaquah has had great depth in the sprints this season, getting good scores from Juliana da Cruz, Madison Callan, Hogan, Gabrielle Gevers and Mack Wieburg. The season performances put the girls in prime position to make a run at state in the 200-meter, 400-meter and 4×400 relay races.

KingCo League Championships were set to start at 3:30 p.m. at Juanita.

Spartans track team sweeps meet against Garfield

With a boys score of 68 and a girls score of 98, Skyline High School’s track and field team put its best face forward April 26 when it swept its home meet against Garfield.

The clouds rolled in over the Sammamish field but never opened up to pour over the event. When the sun peeked out from behind its curtain it was not enough to warm the athletes, who peeled off their sweats only long enough to compete in their particular events.

At the long jump station, Lindsay Coutts, a Skyline junior, quickly shed her warmer layers before taking off down the runway and launching, her arms and legs stretched back before she came down in the sandpit. During her jumps, Coutts kept commenting that she found herself having to slow down before springing from the takeoff board.

“Sometimes my mark is off. I just have to make sure my run-up is solid and I don’t scratch,” she said.

Certainly one of the headliners at this year’s meet will be Skyline’s Kasen Williams, who has the state’s best high jump at 6 feet, 11 inches and top triple jump at 48-3. Williams won the high jump and long jump April 30 at the Shoreline Invitational.

All three teams were in action last week and had some strong performances.
