Issaquah dunks Liberty swimmers

Setting the lineups for swim meets can be a lot like a game of chess for coaches.

Coaches need to anticipate what the opponent will do with his or her lineup, in order to attempt to schedule the best race possible.

Liberty’s fall sports underclassmen take the stage

Less than a year ago, Brigette and Kelsey Takeuchi, Sydney Hartford and Noah Pritchett roamed the halls at Maywood Middle School.

Fast forward to their first year at Liberty High School. Three of them have competed among the top athletes in the state, while the fourth has found a place on a varsity squad that rarely makes room for freshmen.

Issaquah athletes take top state honors

It was another successful year for Issaquah community sports.

Skyline edges Eastlake in KingCo swim showdown

For Skyline High School to earn a pair of victories in KingCo Conference action last week, the Spartans needed help from their seniors, but also from their freshmen and sophomores.

Skyline got first-place times from seniors Paul Jett and Nick D’Alo, and key contributions from underclassmen Nick Nava, Jacob Leahy and Ryan Kinnear to defeat Eastlake (94-91) and Redmond (103-77) in boys swimming and diving action Dec. 10 at Redmond Pool.

Jett qualified for the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle at last season’s Class 4A state championships, but he showed last week that he’s skilled in multiple strokes.

Andi Scarcello swims for Denison University

December 10, 2013

Andi Scarcello, class of 2017, is a member of the Denison University women’s swimming and diving team.

Scarcello, a native of Issaquah, is a graduate of Skyline High School.

Denison, in Granville, Ohio, is currently second in Division III according to the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America Top-25 poll. Denison recently knocked off North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon in their annual dual meet.

Skyline takes fourth in state, Liberty’s Mackenna Briggs wins 100 butterfly

By Greg Farrar Mackenna Briggs, Liberty High School junior, wins her preliminary state 3A heat in the 100 butterfly Nov. 15 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way with a time of 56.31 seconds. Although that time would have sufficed for the state championship, she even shaved more than a second off in the finals Nov. 16 in a time of 55.02 seconds.

A quick glance at the score sheet from the Oct. 3 Liberty versus Issaquah swim meet can be a bit deceiving.

Liberty swimmers took the top spot in eight of the 12 events, yet it was the Eagles who emerged from the competition with a 104-81 win.

Seniors Stephanie Muñoz, Yui Umezawa pace Skyline

Stephanie Muñoz and Yui Umezawa have accomplished a lot during their swimming careers, but their ambitions have grown even larger at the start of their senior seasons at Skyline High School.

Muñoz and Umezawa were major factors in Skyline’s 122-63 victory against district rival Liberty on Oct. 1 at the Julius Boehm Pool, and the results they’ve posted in the Spartans’ first four meets have them on pace for an outstanding finish at the Class 4A state championships in November.

Against Liberty, Umezawa captured first place in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 18.31 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:01.40) Her times were slower than her season-best marks, but she’s already turned in a state-qualifying mark of 1:00.34 in the backstroke and is within a second of qualifying in the 200 individual medley.

Employees swim across Lake Washington for charity

September 24, 2013

Employees of Issaquah-based Gevers Wealth Management recently completed the Puget Sound Blood Center Swim for Life, a swim across Lake Washington.

The team included owner Willy Gevers, and employees Jake Walin and Caleb Walin.

“It was a long swim, and I was really looking forward to a big breakfast by the end,” Jake said.

Issaquah and Liberty high school swim coaches Laura Halter and Kris Daughters know firsthand what it is like traversing through the state’s most competitive league year in and year out.

The Eagles’ Halter guides her teams, boys and girls, through the KingCo 4A league, while the Patriots’ Daughters manages in the KingCo 2A/3A league.
