Jenny Adams takes second at KingCo tennis tournament
Liberty High School tennis player Jenny Adams is going solo this year.
Almost a year after she took second place in the state’s doubles tournament alongside Kristy Braunston, Adams delved into the 2014 postseason as a singles player.
The switch came with a few nerves, Liberty tennis coach Mike Salokas said, but you wouldn’t know it after Adams earned second place in the KingCo 3A tennis tournament May 15.
“Jenny was a little uncomfortable going into the KingCo tournament,” Salokas said. “Last year, she and Kristy Braunston teamed in doubles and had great success in the postseason.”

The 28 singles players and 28 doubles teams that converged on the Skyline High School tennis courts last week knew they’d have to be on top of their games.
At the Class 4A KingCo Conference girls tennis championships, only the two finalists in singles and doubles were guaranteed berths into the state tournament, while the third-place finisher had to win a crossover match with a Wesco Conference foe to get there.
As it turned out, the competition wasn’t the only thing that proved daunting over the course of the three-day event. Eighty-degree temperatures greeted the players in the afternoons, making fitness even more vital.

Tarika Sivakumar and Rianna Eduljee had never played together before, but the Skyline High School tennis duo looked like old pros when they hit the court last week.
Eduljee, a junior, and Sivakumar, a sophomore, were paired up in the No. 1 doubles slot when Skyline hosted Eastlake April 22 in a Class 4A KingCo Conference match.
Eduljee and Sivakumar had relatively little trouble beating Alison Tran and Angela Zou, winning 6-4, 6-0 to lead the Spartans to a 7-0 victory over the Wolves.

In the first set of Marek Pierepiekarz’s Sept. 12 match against Juanita’s Branden Nokes, the Liberty High School sophomore was in complete control.
As the sun beat down and the sweat began to bead across his forehead, Pierepiekarz twirled his tennis racket with ease between serves while making quick work of Nokes on the way to a 6-0 first-set victory at the Tibbetts Park Tennis Courts.

The top doubles tennis teams from Liberty and Issaquah high schools had a lot in common this season.
Both teams paired a senior with a junior. Issaquah’s girls team consisted of senior Sam Garrard and junior Kelsey Wilson, while Liberty had a similar duo of senior Kristy Braunston and junior Jenny Adams.
The teams each took second place at the KingCo championship. Garrard and Wilson finished second to Garfield in the 4A tournament, while Braunston and Adams fell to Mercer Island in the 3A competition.
Finally, in what was a rematch of the KingCo championship for both teams, each earned second-place medals in the state tournament.

The Skyline boys doubles team of Alex Wu and Brayden Hansen finished fifth after defeating Chase Hassig and Henry Wurst, of Bellarmine Prep, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5.

Issaquah and Liberty high schools each sent doubles’ tennis teams to the state tournament this year, and each returned home with hardware.
The Liberty High School duo of Kristy Braunston and Jenny Adams took second place at the 3A state tournament in Kennewick. They are the first Patriots in school history to make state.
Braunston and Adams won three straight matches to reach the state finals in a rematch of the KingCo and District championships.

At the beginning of the spring sports season, the Liberty tennis team’s top two singles’ players approached coach Mike Salokas and informed him that they were going to make the state tournament this year, and they were going to do it as a doubles team.
Fast forward just a few months later, and it appears that Jenny Adams and Kristy Braunston are geniuses as they prepare to head to Kennewick to compete in the state championship May 24 and 25.
“My greatest coaching accomplishment this year is saying OK to them playing doubles in the KingCo tournament,” Salokas said.

After having two of its singles matches decided in tie-breaking sets, the Skyline High School tennis team beat Eastlake 6-1 April 16.
“Skyline’s our rival. Obviously, we want to win, and when we can’t win, we want to put up a good match,” said the Eastlake Wolves’ coach Bud Peterson. “They are a good team. We had our hands full from the get-go.”
Thanks to inclement weather, including hail earlier that day, the match almost didn’t happen. Giving the court extra time to dry out, the two neighboring teams got started about 30 minutes late. Once they did, though, many of the girls found themselves face-to-face with very familiar opponents.
