There might not be a better situation for Dorie Dalzell to land in at the collegiate level, even though the school she chose wasn’t the one she thought she would.
Dalzell’s father and grandfather are University of Kansas alumni, and her boyfriend is currently attending the Division I athletics powerhouse in Lawrence, Kan. It was those factors that had her heavily leaning toward Washington, Arizona and Columbia for her running career at the next level, simply because she wanted a change of scenery.
Kansas was the last school Dalzell visited, and a motivational video she watched with the coaches cinched her decision.

Shelby Kassuba scores a career-high 24 points
With its top-three scorers from last season now playing college basketball, the Skyline High School Spartans girls basketball team has had to find new offensive sources this year.
Senior wing Shelby Kassuba is one of the players who has stepped forward, and she nearly led the Spartans to an important Class 4A KingCo Conference win Dec. 18.
Kassuba scored a career-high 24 points, including 16 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as Skyline’s rally fell short in a 61-58 loss to the visiting Bothell Cougars.
Kassuba’s outburst upped her scoring average to 12.2 points per game, and it gave Spartans coach Greg Bruns something to smile about.

Their teams haven’t had the type of season they were hoping for, but Issaquah High School runners Kennan Schrag and Ellie Clawson aren’t being deterred from their individual goals.
Schrag, a sophomore, topped the boys field, and Clawson, a junior, won the girls race when Issaquah squared off with Skyline and Newport in an Oct. 16 KingCo Conference cross country race at Bellevue’s Kelsey Creek Park.
In the boys race, Issaquah fell short of rival Skyline, which captured the team win with 34 points. However, the Eagles (48 points) won a tiebreaker and defeated Newport for their second win of the season.
Issaquah’s top three runners set the pace for the first half of the 3.1-mile race. Schrag, fellow sophomore Jacob Brueckman, and senior Caleb Walin got out quickly and formed their own pack.

Alex Daugherty has put her talent on display as a basketball and track and field athlete, but she hadn’t run a cross-country race until early September.
The Skyline High School senior is showing she has the stamina for the sport, winning the individual girls title at Klahanie Park in 18:56.
She had plenty of help as Skyline easily defeated Ballard (19-41) and Eastlake (15-50). Sophomore Maizy Brewer was just 2 seconds back in second place, and fellow senior Samantha Krahling took third in 19:04.
