Just before the Liberty High School football team hit the locker rooms after a sun-soaked Aug. 21 practice, they gathered in an end zone and knelt on one knee.
“It’s time for ‘Spotlight on a Champion,’” Liberty coach Steve Valach announced. He asked for nominees and the players quickly identified a teammate. Once chosen, Valach ushered him to the front and put his arm around him.
“What do you know about this guy that has nothing to do with football?” he asked his team. Read more

Four weeks into the high school football season, only one Issaquah School District team remains undefeated — and it’s likely not the team you expected.
The Liberty Patriots improved to 4-0 after a 28-0 road victory over the Lake Washington Kangs on Sept. 26, following wins against Lakewood, Hazen and Interlake.
“It’s amazing. It’s everything I wanted of my senior year,” Liberty running back and linebacker Drew Hall said of the Patriots’ start. “But we still need to keep in mind that it’s 1-0 every week, and we’re on to our next opponent.”

After 16 years at the helm, Liberty High School football coach Steve Valach has seen his fair share of senior classes.

As the Liberty High School football team wrapped up its spring practices June 17, not much looked different on the Patriots’ field.
Music blared, whistles sounded and footballs flew into the outstretched hands of open receivers.
This season will be different, though, for all Liberty sports teams, as they prepare to move from the 3A to 2A level.

The third time proved not to be a charm for the Eagles. The Issaquah High School football team played its third-straight 3A team Sept. 20 against O’Dea.
MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Washington had Issaquah still at 24, despite a 1-1 start. However, it was the lower-ranked, visiting Fighting Irish (38) that pulled off the upset, 51-26.
The two teams were all square at 14 after one quarter. The Eagles scored a pair of touchdowns with the usual suspects — Derek Chapman scored on a 38-yard pass from Jack Neary and Jack Gellatly rambled in from eight yards out.
