Trails club announces scholarship opportunity

The Issaquah Alps Trails Club annually sponsors the Bill Longwell Memorial Scholarship, available to this year’s graduating seniors at Hazen, Issaquah, Skyline and Liberty high schools.

The top prize is a $1,000 scholarship, with second place getting $500 and third place receiving $250. The deadline is May 1.

Closing the school will help the numbers, not the students

Closing Tiger Mountain Community High School during renovations and not creating a temporary home for the school would be a very grievous mistake. The students currently enrolled at Tiger Mountain are there because the conventional high school experience is detrimental to their learning experience. Sending them to a regular high school for even a year will cause them great suffering and hardship.

Issaquah Alps club announces scholarship topics

The Issaquah Alps Trails Club has announced the topics for its annual Bill Longwell Memorial Scholarship.

Longwell was a longtime club member who taught English at Hazen High School for many years. He was an avid hiker and trail builder who, often with the help of his students, was responsible for building and maintaining many of the trails on Tiger and Squak mountains.

Each year since his death in 2007, the Issaquah Alps Trails Club has offered a $1,000 scholarship available to graduating seniors at Issaquah, Liberty, Skyline and Hazen high schools. Often, runners-up qualify for smaller awards.

Skyline hires new assistant principal

June 25, 2013

Sena Camarata, the dean of students at Hazen High School, will join the staff at Skyline High School as an assistant principal July 1.

Camarata recently earned her principal certification and a graduate degree in educational leadership from the University of Washington. Skyline Principal Lisa Hechtman said in a press release that Camarata has been “instrumental in coordinating and leading professional development, helping teachers make their lessons more accessible and rigorous for all students.”
