When Issaquah resident Lorena Kott moved to the city two years ago, she sought an outlet that would both help her meet people and give back to her new community.
She found it in the Issaquah Women’s Club, a social and philanthropic organization that has been bringing Issaquah women together since 1983.
“I loved the duality of the social aspect and the helping aspect,” Kott, the club’s marketing chairwoman, said. “You can have fun, help others and make friends. What more could you want from a club?”

The Cougar Mountain Zoo presents its biggest fundraiser of the year, the Go Wild Gala.
This adults’ only event starts at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1800 N.W. Gilman Blvd.
Past galas have raised funds with specific animal themes, such as the tiger exhibit. This year’s theme is Go Wild, which will benefit overall zoo animal enrichment and zoo expansion.

The Rotary Club of Issaquah will celebrate local charities and cuisine at its seventh annual Grape Escape festival March 7. The event features food, wine and beer from nearby establishments.
The event started as a small wine tasting with about five area wineries featured. Not only has the number of vintners involved quadrupled, but restaurants now also provide appetizer-sized signature dishes. And everyone who participates in the festive event is supporting the Rotary Club’s many charitable undertakings.
“It’s a win-win for everybody,” said Jacalyn Holsted, the Rotary Club’s marketing director. “It’s a chance to have fun, promote local businesses and give back.”
Since 2007, Grape Escape has raised more than $65,000 for many causes, including Rotary First Harvest, Issaquah Food Bank and various student scholarship programs.

Innovation in Issaquah is exemplified by a leading apparel manufacturer, a revolutionary process to transform garbage into fertilizer and a theater renowned for fostering Broadway-bound musicals.
Issaquah Chamber of Commerce and city leaders announced the Innovation in Issaquah honorees — apparel manufacturer SanMar, WISErg, a manufacturer of garbage-to-fertilizer harvesters, and the nonprofit Village Theatre — at a Jan. 24 ceremony and luncheon.
Leaders from the chamber and City Hall recognized the entrepreneurs’ accomplishments through the Innovation in Issaquah contest, a showcase for local businesses offering unique services. Honorees demonstrate innovation in product development, services, systems or strategies.

The 2013 Issaquah Relay for Life is not until June, but it’s never too early to start thinking about ways to raise funds for the event, Gwen Schweitzer, the event’s chairwoman, said.
The relay season officially kicks off in January with a special informational session where attendees have the opportunity to learn more about Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.
Team members and captains are encouraged to attend the hourlong kickoff event to sign up for the 2013 relay, get fundraising tips and play games.
The past two years, the kickoff celebrations were snowed out, Schweitzer said, so the games at this year’s kickoff will have a decidedly wintery flavor.

Towing a horse trailer packed with supplies, Kim Arellano steered her Ford F-350 across the Cascades and close to the Taylor Bridge Fire.
The wildfire raging near Cle Elum and Ellensburg caused hundreds of firefighters to descend on neighboring Kittitas County. The disaster also led Arellano and countless volunteers throughout Washington and the Pacific Northwest to mobilize and support the relief effort.
Arellano is modest about hauling supplies from Issaquah and the Snoqualmie Valley to the fire-stricken area.
“My part was so small, but it was so rewarding,” she said. “I hope that others had an opportunity to have similar experiences. I’m glad my kids were there to witness what it feels like to help out other people.”

The public can donate items to help Cle Elum residents displayed by the Taylor Bridge Fire at a drop-off site in Issaquah.
Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce leaders established a drop-off site at Hilton Garden Inn Issaquah, 1800 N.W. Gilman Blvd. Organizers requested non-perishable food and water, clothing and blankets, toiletries and items for infants, such as diapers and formula, and pet supplies.
Citizens can also donate cash to the relief effort.
The chamber also established drop-off sites in Ellensburg and Yakima.
The wildfire stretches for 17 miles and, so far, burned more than 28,000 acres. The fire is 10 percent contained, and more than 800 firefighters continue to battle the blaze.

When Laurie Carlisle and her Shetland sheepdog Truitt walk into Swedish/Issaquah they possess the magnetism of celebrities. Every eye in the lobby gravitates toward the 4-year-old sheltie. Visitors stop to pet Truitt and passers-by can’t help but smile at the lovable canine.
Truitt attentively sniffs the hands of visitors and flashes his signature goofy smile as his tongue flops out of his mouth. He is a very energetic dog that participates in agility competitions, but at the hospital, the sheltie puts his game face on.
Every Tuesday, Carlisle and Truitt visit patients in the Swedish/Issaquah Oncology Department, bringing smiles and a moment of relief to patients, and staff and family members in the department. Carlisle said Truitt understands the setting and adjusts his behavior accordingly.
“He knows why he’s here,” she said. “He’s just very calming for the patients.”
It is heavy stuff, visiting with patients receiving cancer treatment, but a visit from Truitt can make a world of a difference.

Hilton Garden Inn in Issaquah asks dreamers to build the ultimate to-do list and then turn bucket-list dreams into reality.
The hotel chain and National Geographic Traveler magazine launched the Life’s Ultimate To-Do List contest July 10 to encourage consumers to enter for a chance to accomplish bucket-list dreams.
Organizers ask each entrant to share his or her top to-do list item and explain why he or she should win the prize. The contest runs through Aug. 5 on Hilton Garden Inn’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/HiltonGardenInn.
Ideas could be running a marathon, trekking into a rainforest or backpacking across Europe. Organizers plan to add entries to Hilton Garden Inn’s ongoing Ultimate To-Do List, a comprehensive guide to fun and interesting things to explore around the globe.
The 10 best entries qualify as grand-prize winners, and the entrants can fulfill their to-do list items. Each winner receives a three-day, two-night trip worth up to $5,000. The trip includes roundtrip airfare for the winner and a guest near a Hilton Garden Inn, spending money, a camera to document the adventure and a yearlong subscription to National Geographic Traveler.
