Flowers in December?

It’s December. I was sitting by the window looking at my deck this morning. I had set a pot of mums from the supermarket out there, because it was warm and I thought they would like it.

The shocking color of the red and yellow mums against the weathered browns, mossy greens and gray twigs was startling. The flowers didn’t fit with the otherwise perfect Northwest scene that I am used to.

Christmas Boat Parade hits Lake Sammamish

A new tradition begins this year with the first parade of boats decked out in holiday lights on Lake Sammamish at 5 p.m. Dec. 7 (rain date Dec. 8) at the state park beach.

Friends of Lake Sammamish State Park invite the public to sing carols around a bonfire and sip hot chocolate while enjoying the magic of the twinkling lights on the boats from the beach at the park. Visitors will need a Discover Pass to enter the park or pay a $10 admission fee per carload.

Help fund downtown Issaquah holiday lights campaign

NEW — 6 a.m. Oct. 22, 2013

The Downtown Issaquah Association will decorate downtown with lights in celebration of the holidays and is looking for donations to its holiday lighting fund.

As a contributor, you will be able to deduct 75 percent of your donation from your state B&O tax, according to a news release from the association. Other tax benefits may apply.
