Timber Ridge at Talus was recently honored during the King County Healthcare Coalition Forum held at Seattle City Hall for its creative fire and earthquake survival training videos for staff and residents of nursing and retirement communities.

Timber Ridge at Talus received the Excellence In Innovation award for producing a three-part DVD training series and facilitator toolkit with the help of Eastside Fire & Rescue and Fire Station 72 with scripting, filming and producing.

The videos provide general safety guidelines and scenarios: Drop, Cover, and Hold techniques, fire extinguisher demonstrations and defend-in-place strategies. In Timber Ridge’s training delivery, personnel from EFR added realism by using a smoke machine to imitate a fire in a health center room as staff members demonstrated correct procedures during emergency situations.

Volunteer joins Taylor Bridge Fire relief effort

August 21, 2012

Towing a horse trailer packed with supplies, Kim Arellano steered her Ford F-350 across the Cascades and close to the Taylor Bridge Fire.

The wildfire raging near Cle Elum and Ellensburg caused hundreds of firefighters to descend on neighboring Kittitas County. The disaster also led Arellano and countless volunteers throughout Washington and the Pacific Northwest to mobilize and support the relief effort.

Arellano is modest about hauling supplies from Issaquah and the Snoqualmie Valley to the fire-stricken area.

“My part was so small, but it was so rewarding,” she said. “I hope that others had an opportunity to have similar experiences. I’m glad my kids were there to witness what it feels like to help out other people.”

Children win when community unites

There is nothing like a good challenge, especially in the name of a good cause. Issaquah’s two leading service clubs — Rotary and Kiwanis — challenged each other to see who would donate the most for the purchase of computer flash drives for students in need.

The club challenge was just a small part of a wonderful outpouring of support to fill 1,000 backpacks for kids registered with the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank.

Numerous groups got together to coordinate the drive. The PTSA Council and Issaquah Education Association kicked things off by gathering donations of gift cards that could be used to purchase school supplies.

School supplies for 1,000 children

It’s hard to imagine that nearly 1,700 children in the Issaquah School District are on the free or reduced-price lunch program.

It’s many of these same students who will be the recipients of the 1,000 backpacks stuffed with school supplies that the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank and other community service groups are providing. That’s double the number of recent years.

Every parent or guardian knows that school supplies are not a small expense. First, there is the backpack. One sturdy enough to last the year can cost $20 to $25. Thankfully, the employees at SanMar have committed to supply 1,000 backpacks.

Businesses react to Issaquah plastic bag ban

July 31, 2012

Local business leaders raised concerns about shoppers bypassing Issaquah after a retail plastic bag ban for retailers of 7,500 square feet or more goes into effect March 1, 2013.

The measure does not go into effect for smaller businesses until March 1, 2014.

In addition to limiting most plastic bags, the legislation requires retail stores to collect 5 cents for each paper bag provided to customers. The fee is meant to help offset the changeover cost as retailers eliminate plastic bags.

Issaquah Chamber of Commerce leaders urged consumers to continue shopping in Issaquah.
